school - detention - giving notice

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience, a question that my daughter asked me tonight - (touch wood no detentions yes - hope there wont be).
She said a teacher told her class that they no longer have to send a permission slip / notice to the parent that the child has detention the following day, that they can keep the pupil after school if they so want to.
Not being in the position I wondered if anyone could throw light on this.
Thank you in advance x

Firstly child needs to stay out of trouble. Then this won't be an issue.
However, if child does get in trouble and can't attend detention the next day then it's up to the child to negotiate with the school and advise their own parent who can also then negotiate with the school. Parent would need to speak with head teacher.
If they fail to attend detention they could be excluded from school for a period of time.
You would need to speak with the head teacher again to resolve the issue.

Must admit I never got permission slips for detention. They did however give at least a days notice, just enough to let my parents know in advance.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Mine are at a school where you get detentions for forgetting pe kit or not handing homework in on time.
Though the school quotes the 'we don't have to give notice' lien in practise they do. Does this mean they won't inform you though, that bit I would check with school what their policy is, as you may be concerned if child doesn't arrive home on time.0 -
I'll leave out the obvious solution to the problem as it's already been mentioned!!
Way I see it the school has the mindset that in the event of any detention being dished out the child would most likely notify the parent that they'll be late home by mobile phone. Even in the event of no message the first port of call would be a phone call to the school office where they'll be told of any disciplinary proceedings.
All changed days from when I was at school, I'd randomly go off down town after school & not turn up until after 5 some days, parental unit never really bothered about that. The assumption was never made that I'd be in any harm or suchlike, never did either my sister or myself any harm & if I was going to be later than 5.30 I'd text anyway!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
my Old school never gave notice, if detention was that day after school my brother would have a hurried phone call from the office to let my parents know theyd have to pick him up after school.0

From Adivceguide (CAB)
Detention
Detention after school hours is allowed, whether or not a parent consents to the detention, as long as:
a school has made it known to both pupils and parents that the detention of pupils at the end of the school day is one of its disciplinary measures, and
the detention is carried out by the head teacher or another authorised teacher, and
the detention is ‘reasonable’, for example, the pupil’s age and any special educational or religious needs are taken into account, and
the school takes the pupil’s safety into account by considering, for example, when it will get dark, the availability of public transport to get home and the likelihood of racist attack, and
the pupil is aged under 18, and
the detention is on a school day or in England, also on a Saturday or Sunday during term time as long as it isn't just before or after half term or a day set aside for staff training, and
in Wales, the pupil’s parent has been given 24 hours' written notice that a detention is due to take place (this doesn't apply to lunchtime detentions)
In Wales, guidance on the use of detention is available on the Welsh Government website at: https://www.new.wales.gov.uk PDF .
If a pupil is injured or killed as a result of being kept in after school and, for example, having to travel home later on their own, the local education authority or governing body may have been negligent and be liable to pay compensation to the parent.
A pupil can be disciplined by a member of staff in charge of them whether or not they are on school premises, for example, if they are on a school trip.0 -

In some alternate universe, anyway. Certainly not in this one where teachers certainly are flawed, prone to error and overreact. At least, some of the ones that taught me were.
I never got a detention or more serious punishment at school. If I had, it would have created a drama as I lived 10 miles from the school and the only way to travel home was the school bus. There was no public transport, and even if there were I had no money for it. I guess the teacher in question would have had to wait until detention was over then drive me home. I saw more than one punishment handed out in error or that was grossly disproportionate though, but this was in the days where teachers had absolute unquestioned authority so you couldn't say anything or tell them they had made a mistake for fear of getting punished yourself for "talking back" (and yes, the prospect of being caned was a serious deterrent).Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
My school used to phone parents if the kids had detention. It would be carried out the same day.

A post of sanity. I do get irritated by these cyber saints who spend their souless lives sitting behind a keyboard in judgement of others. Kids get into trouble, it's a fact of life. However I think it's foolish schools don't give notice of detention because the parents could be fretting over the lateness of the kid getting home. Having said that my youngest son's school always gave a letter of notice a few days prior although the detention itself was no deterrent of bad behaviour as all the kids did was to read.“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

Surely a 5 minute phone call to the school would answer the question quicker? Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.
