I thought that things only needed to be returned complete and with packaging if you were relying on the store's good nature to return something you have changed your mind about - in that instance the shop would re-sell the item, and hence it must be in 'as new' condition.
However, unless the instructions caused the fault (which seems highly unlikely) it would seem irrelevant whether they were included or not!

Sounds like she was nit picking, she may as well have asked where the bubble wrap was. Hope you got it replaced in the end. Its funny, the instructions are the first thing I throw away, and having never read them, generally regret it a few days later.
