Just a quick note on the Triple QX 5w30 C3 - it is Mercedes-Benz approved. I was very surprised to find that and was enough to make me not want to spend more on the OEM one (£59 on eBay for 20L).

So not all Triple QX are equal - I think the semi-syn is not that great...

errrm £59 for 20 litres is a pretty good deal.

Though I really wouldn't want a big 20 litre can in my shed. I bought 5l triple qx for a recent service with 1.5l left. I didn't want to have the oil bottle lyinf around in my shed until next year so I gave away the 1.5L bottle on freecycle.

Your friend at Shell can confirm then that Triple QX is actually rebranded shell oil yes?

the shell thing has never been quantified by anyway, it's just rumours.

Just like there are school rumours that red bull/sunny delight has cow sperm in it and that you can sell your school tie brand label for more money than the tie costs.

Are bovines the only animals where the female produces the sperm?

The cheap stuff is usually made with a high percentage of recycled engine oil (this is what happens to waste oil).

  • I was about to change the oil next year, but the car is running so much smoother after a significant top of

Comma XTC5L 5L XTech Fully Synthetic 5W30 Motor Oil

    only £22.95

May be there is enough for a service in 2017

There is no way you can tell if the engine is running smoother, it's just perception.**

**exception being the car did not have a oil change in 80k miles and running on sludge like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC-SxrsgEwo

If you can actually feel the engine running smoother than it would be ACTUALLY running smoother and your mpg would increase immediately after the oil change.

Oil changes would be a MSE tip, improve your mpg by oil changes!!

But nobody has ever documented this mpg improvement because it's never happened. Oil companies don't advertise this as a benefit of their product either.

Changing grade oil can help improve mpg by 2-5. If you go from a 15w-40 to 5w-30.

are you talking from experience or theory?

Because 15W-40 would be used by super heavy duty freight trucks and if you're putting the same oil used in a 1.6 golf into a freight truck, good luck to you.
