Bigjil so what you're saying is that the designer brands like castrol edge and mobil are better than triple qx?
They always say don't feed the troll but why not.
Of course they are better than Triple QX.
Triple QX is a budget formulation which will meet the minimum specs indicated.
They might use cheaper base stocks, have a weaker additive package, lower TBN etc.0 -

It's a bit of a dumb experiment though because oil will never cook like that inside the car, the oil is always recirculating so it gets to cool down in the sump before it is sucked in back to the block.
Perhaps castrol have a case to make for racing cars - but it's completely wasted on a runabout car - just like premium petrol is wasted on a runabout car.
I think you are confusing OE oil such as the one in the video and the specifications that a Manufacturer recommends for their vehicles.
There is also no guarantee that that video is above board.
I don't know who make the BMW OE 0w40.
It could be Mobil, Liqui Moly or even Castrol.
I know that Ford OE branded oil was produced by Castrol at one point, but it was Magnatec not Edge.0 -
Shell have recently become BMW's supplier of OE oil. It use to be Castrol but I suspect Shell offered to pay more money. BMW Motorsport division only use Fuchs as OE oil.
Usually reputable companies such as Mobil, Castrol, Shell etc. are the suppliers of OE oil for nearly all manufacturers but in some cases the manufacturer rebrand the oil. Example, VAG use Castrol Edge 5w30 as their OE oil but their own OW oil use to be called 'Castrol Edge Professional' which is the same stuff as the Castrol Edge but with a different dye. Now its called 'Quantum longlife' or something or the other.
This interactive graph give a good indication of oil spec peformance compared. VW 507.00 looks pretty much the best overall - which can also be used as BMWLL04 and Merc spec.

Earlier you said any old !!!!!! would do?0 -
Choice of oil depends partly on how long you keep vehicles. If you change every year or two then it's not so critical. I have three cars ..aged 10, 18 and 57 years plus a compact tractor aged 32 years and a boat with auxiliary marine diesel aged 28 years. Only the 57 year old has had an engine overhaul ..done by me in 1982. All are fed respectable non-supermarket oil.0

But for the DIY servicer the cost difference between TripleQX and castrol edge for instance isn't much (£20). So I dont mind spending more money if it's going to make a difference.
I would suggest that changing the oil more frequently (with the correct spec) has a more beneficial effect than spending 2 or 3 times the price on top of the range stuff.
Unless you keep the car until you or it expires, I don't think you will realize any of the benefit of premium priced oil.0 -
me mate works as a chemist at Shell. He says there is a difference in that all some of the fancy branded ones have more additives and higher quality base stock. But he would talk rubbish like that...
For me oil is just oil it's all the same. Just get a cheap bottle of semi syn from local supermarket £15 for 5 litre which can be use for any car.0 -
I have asked him and no, Shell do not make Triple QX oil. He says its most likely from the same supplier as either Carlube or Comma - who also happen to supply some Supermarket oils and are generally of lower quality compared to Castrol/Fuchs/Mobil etc.
He also said it isn't completely mandatory to stick to engine oils that are approved by manufacturers. For example there are engine oils out there that aren't approved but surpass those oils that are approved in terms of quality and additives. For example Fuchs Race Pro S 5w40 (formally known as Silkolene) is an ester based oil and can be used on VAG PD cars with 505.01 approval.0
