Got a bit dicey in Tesco last night....

Cashier hands me £10.02 in change for a bottle of wine and dinner (bag needed).

"Can I have a bag too please?"

    *Funny look from the cashier*

Thankfully I had 10p in my pocket :T

At work, I had a customer that said 'can't get to grasps with having bags with me'

How much brain does it require to pop a couple of bags for life folded in your handbag or coat pocket? Use an elastic band to prevent them unravelling.

I remembered and begrudge paying the bag charge. Thankfully every time I shopped before I kept most of the bags especially the big ones. they came in SOOOO handy this week.

It's nice having all of my new buys in a couple bags now though, as I'm less likely to lose any.

You don't need an elastic band http://youtu.be/5hao8GmvUW0
  • At my local village Co-op there's very little space for packing at the side of the till and the assistant always asks for the customers' bags so she can pack for them as she swipes things through. Nothing wrong with that but some of the filthy old fabric/hessian and other bags that get handed over and put on the shop counter to be packed look very unhygienic:eek:. I don't see any staff regularly swabbing the counter.

Also, in the old days if I bought heavy stuff such as a couple of bottles of wine and a few tins the assistant used to 'double bag' them, plastic carrier bags being notoriously flimsy. Does that mean we need to pay 10p a time to get our heavier stuff safely home or even out to the car:(?

Yesterday, I bought some gift wrap in Paperchase. I declined the offer of a bag, fully planning to carry the rolled up paper in my hand back to the office. The assistant promptly took a small (greeting card size) bag, wrapped that around the rolled paper, taped it in place and passed it to me. So I know have a single-use bag, that I didn't pay for and can't practically re-use... Kind of misses the point doesn't it?
I need to think of something new here...

Yup, or take your own bag... Which is the point.

As I see it this niggardly charge is sufficiently offputting sufficient to kill impulse purchases. I'm already fed up with going around shops with my pocket stuffed with plastic bags. Online shopping will be further encouraged by this daft idea and the high street shops will just go.

I got into the habit of carrying bags witth me when the 5p charge was first announced. I carry one of the larger bags for life, and inside about half a dozen smaller ones folded neatly with a ruber band round them.

    Easy.
