It it's "used" you (or the receipient) won't be able to take advantage of the exchange policy if say it's the wrong size.
Even if it is a pretty pink one for your wife? What if it was a gift, would you unashamedly use it and give it soiled? Lovely.
Thinking about it I don't believe my wife owns any pink clothing, she's not a fluffy kind of gal :-)0 -
Wear the coat/shoes out of the shop OR take a bag large enough/ clean enough OR pay 5p. What is the problem here, exactly?0

I've been following the debate for a while, and didn't realise that the more heavy-duty type of bags used for clothes by M&S etc was included in the legislation; had it in my head, either from skim-reading the actual legislation or on here, that it was for single-use bags, ie the very flimsy supermarket ones, and not the more sturdy department store type, which I have never thought of as 'single use'.
Listening to the debates at the clothes' tills last Monday, at least we're not the only ones to misunderstand that aspect...
I think this miss-conception stems from the fact that supermarkets have been encouraging us for years to to re-use bags by way of green points and bags for life. So when the rule came in people wrongly assumed that it was just those bags it referred to.
As someone who would often take my bags with me when I did grocery shopping, previously I would never think to take my own bags when it came to clothes shopping. I suspect most people were the same. I have been caught out a few times since the charge when I have just 'popped' into non-grocery shops and forgot a bag.
I do think that the introduction of the charge was not handled well, the public were not really informed properly. I did see a big sign in one of the supermarkets but never saw any of the non-grocery stores with big signs up.0 -
I've used one of these for years, big enough to fit in a heap of food, a shoe box or even a new coat. Of course you could buy 145 carrier bags for the same price

I dont know where this crazy notion that bags have always been free has come from ...the cost has been built into everything you buy !
Still at least while everyone is spending all their time obsessing over a few pence , no one is worrying what else is going on in the worldVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

I imagine you can still worry about other things in addition to the 5p bag charge.0 -
Are you seriously suggesting that having bought a coat, say from M and S you should walk out of the store carrying the item without a bag.
Firstly you would need to explain to the security guard at the door that you had a receipt.
Then having walked with said coat it rains, what do you think of your chances of getting a refund if needed, having exposed the coat to the elements.
No I'm afraid despite my objection to the new charge I will not be going down that route.
Do you normally buy stuff , take it home then bring it back for a refund?Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

Of course it has but I don't see the price of items going down now the bag charge is separated out :rotfl:
Why do people assume just because someone is having a moan about something trivial, that they do not care about anything else.0 -

How will i fit it all in , what with Christmas , the weather , taking kids out of school in term time , reclining seats on a plane , preparing for when the sh*t hits the fan ( have you read that thread !) ...........the list is endless
Actually a 5p bag could be the answer the everythingVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0
