Hi,
Thank you for the info. Booked today and so looking forward to it. We intend to get the $24 7 day metro ticket so getting around will be no problem (she says with tongue in cheek). We are travelling coutesy of Amtrak from Boston to New York on the 12th, and all being well arriving mid afternoon. A friend has loaned us some really good books on New York (Moon Metro - New York City andEye Witness Travel - New York Now) and a last years edition of 'Where' which we are finding really useful. So, thanks for the info, you've saved us some $, which in the long run means more spending money. Look forward to receiving the reccomendations of restaurants/cafes/pubs. Regards - Sally PS Hope you enjoy your next visit.0 -

check out my guide, which should help you with the subway, (fingers crossed!)
Another useful guide book is one called NFT (not for tourists) and it is really not for tourists, but i find it useful, as all it is, is a collection of maps, and what amenities, restaurants, bars etc are nearby.. it also has all the subways on there too... i find it so useful to carry around... take a look at their website http://www.notfortourists.com and you can print out pages from the book (but do buy it if you like it) means you can try before you buy.0 -
Hi,
Thanks again. I had already read your brilliant article on getting around and the journeys from the airports. First class.
You've forgotten to give me the name of the decent cafes/eating houses, and eating is one of my priorities!!!! Regards - Sally0 -
mmm eating....
on reade street, there is the reade street pub and kitchen, its a great pub/bar, good food, probably good for the first night.. opposite that there is DEKK, which has a screening room, but also does some interesting food from, which is sometimes classed as mediterranian/contempary.. i've been a couple of times to dekk and enjoyed it both times..
a bit further north in tribeca, there is the tribeca grill, an amazing restaurant,
as for a quick snack, the best place i found near the cosmo, is the deli, across the road (towards reade street) on the corner, (i'll get full addresses for everything for you). 24 hours, fridges full of different fruit juices, plenty of HUGE subs/rolls made infront of you.. buy the stuff, and take it back to the hotel (they don't mind!)
these are my choices, but there are plenty around, and the best thing to do is explore.
ADDRESSES
DEKK - 134 Reade St, New York, NY 10013
Reade Street Pub & Kitchen - 135 Reade St, New York, NY 10013
Tribeca Grill - 375 Greenwich St. (Corner of Franklin St) New York, NY 100130 -
Hi, Thanks again. Look forward to receiving the addresses as and when. It is our intention to explore even when we get to the 'totally, completely knack****' stage. New York has been on my 'to visit' list for ages now so I'm really excited and especially at Xmas time, its the icing on the cake. I know the weather won't be very good but that isn't putting us off at all.
Thanks again for all your help and I'm sure you'll enjoy your next visit and don't forget to let us know all about it. Regards - Sally0 -
I would recommend the Red Roof hotel if people are looking for an affordable but nice hotel. Its on 37th Street round the corner from the Empire State building which we could see from our bedroom window. Rooms are spacious and you even get breakfast (just bagels, doughnuts and coffee etc but still worth it)
Also for somewhere different to eat there is a huge self service cafeteria in the basement of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (in Central Park) which does a good variety of tasty food!0 -
just a thought, and a suggestion. when we recommend a hotel (not specifically for anyone who's asking) why not put on the standard room rate. This can be in either UK, or US currency and also which website. obviously there are loads of offers, but, a standard room rate is quite useful to see if the rate you've found is a bargain..
example - cosmopolitan hotel - standard room rate $175
example - cosmopolitan hotel - hotelconxions.com room rate as low as $135
redroofinn standard room rate - $239
edison hotel standard room rate - $195
etc etc... i just think it makes bargain hunting easier...0 -
have you thought of renting an appt? vrbo.com and antiquecafebb.com are quite good0

apartments are great for more than one person, because then it probably will work out cheaper than a hotel, however for solo travellers, i find that a good/cheap hotel will work out better value for money..
and also, i've found a photo of the cosmopolitan hotel, just so people know what it looks like..0 -
Just wanted to leave details of a very very cheap (and reputable rated #11 of best hotels in NY) hotel in NY, i have booked for Nov/Dec 07, as i know how ridiculous and daunting NY hotel prices seem, so this might soften the blow a bit!
