    Hi all!

I'm getting Married on 31/12/08 and we want to go to NYC for 2 weeks for our honeymoon, we'll likely fly out from dublin or belfast but would also consider london if there was a reasonable difference in price, so i have a few questions...

    - what is usually the best day of the week to fly out on to get the cheapest price?

    - should we stay in two different hotels to allow us to explore different areas?

    - when is the best time to book flights? next jan is not available anywhere yet.

    - how far in advance is it best to book hotels?

    thanks everyone!
  • i'll start the first round of the argument......
you really don't want to go to NYC for 2 weeks ....it's a waste especially at that time of year .
i'd want to add another destination(s) to fill the 2 weeks.

i'll agree with hammy... 1 week in new york is plenty. its a very fast paced environment, and it is a city that rarely sleeps, (ok, i rarely sleep when i'm there)..

i'll answer your questions as well..

1 - midweek is cheaper normally, must include a saturday night stay, though this isn't an issue with your current plans

2 - no, everywhere in manhattan is easily accessible by subways, taxis, busses, etc, so no need to change hotels, if you did stay that long..

3 - read my guides about booking your NYC holiday, my recommendation is around 3 months before, but as you're going for a very specific reason, you might want to book earlier, however it might not be the cheapest price.

4 - the more that gets booked, the higher prices go up, again 3 months is normally fine. as you're not going to be there for NYE's and flying probably after, it is low season

also, in jan, it can be COLD COLD COLD.... i'd definately split up your holiday,

if you really love city breaks (i do) then you could easily do New York, then travel up to somewhere like Chicago, or go west coast and see San Francisco

  • Hi,
Try looking at the aerlingus site (www.aerlingus.com) They get some really good prices from Dublin to New York although I think you will be too early to check just yet. Might I suggest a few days in Boston. Just over 4 hours by Amtrak and the scenary all the way there is stunning. I would do 5 nights in NY, 4 nights in Boston and back to New York for the remainder. As Markymoo said, it will be very cold,(colder in Boston) but hopefully as a newlywed, you'll have your love to keep you warm!!!! Regards - Sally
  • Noooooooo....not you guys too!!!!!! Everyone we've mentioned New York to has said not to go for two weeks and we've been thinking that maybe they're the type of people who'd rather be on a beach somewhere than be in a city and that's why they're saying that but if the 'New York Experts' are saying this too then I'm concerned!

We absolutely love city's, we went to Marmaris Turkey in May and although we enjoyed it we both agreed it'd be a long time before we'd do that type of holiday again! We love London and stayed for a week last year and we honestly didn't want to come home and that's why we thought we'd easily manage two weeks in NYC. I appreciate it's all such a fast pace but considering we're going on honeymoon we want to take our time and see and do everything we want and not feel like we have to be on the go all day everyday for a week to see and do everything we want and have had no time to ourselves at all!

As for the temp...yep we're aware that it'll be pretty chilly but i guess we'll just have to wrap up well.

If you's still advise against two weeks would 10 days be a suitable compromise or would this still be over doing it?

i'm addicted to New York, and i'd live there if i had the chance..

i do 6 nights normally in NYC when i go visit, my last visit was in september, and i'm going in again in less than 6 weeks..

i could easily fill up 2 weeks there, and still enjoy every second, but i'd say it depends what your overall budget is.

as you're a city break person (like me. i hate beach holidays) then do it... in jan you will have basketball games and ice hockey games on, they always make a great evening out, also, i'd suggest never to eat in the same restaurant twice, trust me, you have plenty of choice

if you did do 2 weeks, i dunno if it is worth changing hotels, again, depends on budget, maybe split it between a really posh hotel for the first couple of days, and then maybe go to a more reasonable base for the rest of your holiday, there isn't much of a need to change to explore a different area, just hop on the subway.

you could easily rent a car, and drive somewhere for a couple of days, plenty of nice places around that will get you out of the city, but i never bother.

take a day trip to niagra falls mabye... thats a good one....
  • Thankyou Markymoo! that's all i needed, a fellow city lover to say that they could easily manage two weeks there!

That's exactly what we've been thinking of doing, days shopping either in the city or woodbury common, sightseeing, see a few shows, try loads of different foods, time to just dander off and explore at our leisure, day trips out of the city, other half would love to rent a car in america too.

As you say it's just the money we'd get through while we're there but then again it's our honeymoon so we're planning to make the most of it! I am reassured again that we could easily cope with two weeks as we just love the buzz of cities!

I love cities, but I don't think I could do two weeks in NY. Why not do ten days and then take yourself off to another city? There are lots of them!

Describing Jan in New York as 'pretty chilly' is an understatement. It will be freezing ... literally! Although it adds to the atmosphere, there is only so much you can do in that weather (when I was there they were advising people not to go out at all unless it was essential!).

I love New York. It is absolutely fantastic. But you would be robbing yourself of everything else that the States has to offer by only staying there.
    Gone ... or have I?
