I'm off to NY on 5th December, and am having a camera dilemma!

My current Canon has broken & the repair costs are as much as I could get a new basic model for here.

What with the exchange rate not being too hot at the moment, and the fact that I'm going to have to make purchasing a camera when I arrive one of my first priorities, is it worth waiting until I'm out there to get one?

I'm not sure if I'll get significantly better value for money out there with the poor exchange rate, or even if I should purchase a camera in duty free at Heathrow instead?

    Anyone done anything similar recently?
I can't help particularly, but DH was on the lookout for a diddy computer (an Eeeeeeee kind of thing) when we went. He'd done a little research before we left, and saw something at quite a good price in Dixons at Gatwick, but didn't buy it, thinking he'd get a better price in NY.

He came back empty-handed, having spent a couple of merry hours in various geeky shops. A combination of they didn't have quite what he wanted, or the prices weren't keen enough.

Personally I would want to buy a camera before leaving, to get used to using it before the trip. but then I'm not a natural with cameras. Plus I'd worry about it going wrong, it's a long way to take it back if you buy it in NY.

So maybe the answer is to do your research, and if you'd be happy with 'almost anything by Canon', or 'This one or that one', you could risk waiting to see if you can get it at the airport, and then read the manual instead of watching the in-flight movie.

Someone will shoot me down in flames for these opinions, but that's just the way I'd approach it.

Thanks SavvySue, I hadn't even considered the possibility of having to return it so I think I'll try finding something at the airport - I'm not a great flyer so it'll give me something to take my mind off getting on the plane!

I am thinking of booking the Embassy Suites for a trip to NY in feb or april, as recommended on this thread - hotel sounds great. I wonder if someone who has been there knows the answer to this one - we will be going with our two grown-up daughters and I am not sure whether to book the king suite or the one with the 2 double beds -would 2 people be able to sleep on the sofa bed in the king suite?

Probably be best to go for the 2 double beds but it depends on your circumstances. The sofa bed would be okay for a couple of nights but they might get ratty pulling it out and tucking it in, and it takes away from your living area if you are going to shop all day and collapse at night in the room.

Another question re electricals if anyone can help - if I buy a DS in New York, will everything work ok back here?

I assume I'd need to buy a separate UK power lead at least, but other than that I'm wondering whether it'll still be a saving or not.

Yes to both questions - it will work fine and you will need a UK lead / adapter.

I'm not sure it will be cheaper in the US with the current exchange rate though, in fact I think it may even be a little more pricey.
  • Hi friends

i'm off to New York in February next year. I want to go to see the New York Knicks but i'm not sure where to get tickets from.

I found a few seat exchange websites selling cheap tickets but after trying to buy some, it appears that they don't really sell to people from the UK.

Does anyone know any good places to get them?

Yes I thought that might be the case, such bad timing for the exchange rate!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you may have to get them via www.ticketmaster.com - the US site.

  • Hi
I'm going to New York in th beginning December for 5 nights. Whilst we were there, we were thinking of going to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Does anyone know if it is better/ cheaper to buy tickets before we go or when we get there?
