I have to be honest and say I'm actually quite scared at the thought of arriving in the vastness of New York and so far everything I have read only scares me further, But its been a dream of my DH's to go there and he took me to vegas this year for my 40th so I wil get my head round it once I've read, read and read some more.

I haven't booked anything yet, was thinking after xmas might be an ok time to book flights? although BA prices seem quite reasonable just now? thoughts please anyone??

As for the rest of it.... I'll be here for the next while asking and reading to catch up with whats what ;)

    Regards

pinkpinkfizz... i go every year in march, and i'm a lazy lazy person, and don't book til around december january time...

march is a lowish season, especially at the beginning (when i go for my birthday!), and i'd hope that we can grab flights this next year for around the £300 mark...

if you want to book now, book now, then you know you have it... if you like umming and aahing about flight prices... do what i do and wait, and hope that you get a bargain price!

therefore $2.50 + 60 x £0.40 = $26.90 + tolls + tip (oneway), however if you have ever been to NY you will know that the potential of just driving anywhere with no delays is almost impossible, so you could probably easily double that amount.

aaah.. but you are forgetting that Woodbury Common isn't in New York, NY, it is actually in Central Valley, NY (state) so therefore this applies

For a trip beyond the limits of New York City, except Westchester or Nassau Counties, or Newark Airport, the fare shall be a flat rate (a flat rate is a definite amount fixed between the driver and the passenger at the start of the trip). This flat rate shall be negotiated prior to the trip and entered into the meter via the technology enhancements or TPEP system (when available) using Rate Code 5.

so, how much will it be... no one knows.... a trip of that length, a taxi driver wouldn't get a ride back, so it would be at least DOUBLE what phatbear has suggested on the basis of a standard fare guide...
  • If its around $120 to woodbury common for two people return isnt that bad is it?Because i think the coach is around $20 each way. Is anyone there between 11th-16th December who wants to go in a taxi to make it cheaper??

ok... it is 40 miles from my house to manchester airport, and that run is £55, so around $93.50.... maybe if you think about that kinda price, then you'll get somewhere near how much a one way taxi will be..

and then, how you gonna get back.. there ain't many taxis around woodbury, and you wouldn't be getting an NYC cab..
  • Hi everyone

First of all, thank you to everyone for posting on this thread as it has been invaluable reading. I am going to new york from 14-18 November and am currently trying to find a hotel. There are 4 of us going and from what I have read it seems reasonable to have a budget of £100 per person per night (about £1,600 overall). Ideally we need two rooms, one double and one twin. Have found a few hotels which seem reasonable, the Washington Jefferson Hotel and Hotel 41 seem to be the best but have searched the forums and doesn't seem like anyone has used either on here. Just looking for some confirmation really that the budget is reasonable and if there is anything better I could find? Have used the obvious sites already, lastminute, expedia etc.

Any help would be appreciated and keep posting everyone.

    *confused*

NYC hotels are charged per room, not per person per night.

i'm sure in my inane ramblings no one has said anything like a per person per night rate, and always have been saying a minimum budget is something like £150 a night (so £50 less than you're thinking!)
  • I am looking to book one of the Raddison hotels in NYC for 6 days. There is a cheap inc breakfast rate for 4 of the days but not the other two - can I split my booking to cover the 6 days?? Also, any discount codes out there for Raddison hotels?
  • Hello to everyone on the New York thread.

I've come on to this thread to read up on New York as I am planning a surprise trip for my DH's 40th birthday in March 09.

I have to be honest and say I'm actually quite scared at the thought of arriving in the vastness of New York and so far everything I have read only scares me further, But its been a dream of my DH's to go there and he took me to vegas this year for my 40th so I wil get my head round it once I've read, read and read some more.

Thanks to all those who have shared your knowledge so far....

Don't panic - I was also a bit worried about going but it is the best place ever! Felt much safer than walking around London and everything is easy to get to. Make a list of everywhere you want to get to beforehand otherwise you might end up just walking around looking up (which is still good). You might know where you want to go but I can recommend the bar at the top of the Marriot hotel (I think its that one) in Times Square which revolves and you can sip a glass of champers at the same time or the Rainbow Room at NBC studios is also good (pricey though) for views and a posh drink.

sod the views and a posh drink.. go where the locals go and visit the neighbourhood dive bar....

the locals drink there cos it is great, the atmosphere is normally much more fun, and they'll recommend the best places to eat, as they eat there, so you don't get ripped off as a tourist...

    ;)
