Thanks for that. So......all the trains going through a 'white dot with a black circle' station will stop there. So I need to look at the black dot stations further along the line to see if the train I'm about to get onto stops at them?
Black Dots are Local Stops
White Dots with a Black Circle are Express Trains.
Local trains stop everywhere. Express trains only stop at express stops.
I think we're on the same page...
Ok let me see if I have this right. you suggest the express 2 or 3 to 14th street because they miss out all the locals. Get off at 14th then wait for a local 1 or 9.
I think where I got myself muddled is by looking at the bog numbered/coloured circles at the side of the lines at just hopping on any train...so hopping on a 1,2,3 or 9.
I've given myself many headaches looking at the map in my guidebook so please tell me I'm right and if I am.....then thank you so muchand I promise not to call any trains by their colours. The yellow train sounds much nicer than the P train though
Yes, you'll get to your destination faster, if you get an express part of the way, and then jump on the local to where you need to go... never overshoot though, as most stations you'd have to leave, and go back in, and if you ain't got a unlimited fare card, this will cost you another $2..
Most stations have different tracks for express and local trains. So, if you need a black dot/local station, look at the sign, and only get on a train that is on that local track.
If you're stuck, ask someone for help. New Yorkers are arrogant when you're walking slowly in their way, but actually love to help, because they like to be know it alls!!!!
And if you do ask a New Yorker.. they have no idea what a yellow train is... remember.. local / express. the 1, 2, 3, 9 are all red trains, which is why you don't call them by colour, as then you can get lost... each number and letter is a different route, especially when out of Manhattan..
Good Luck, you'll be a master at the subway in notime!0 -
Is anyone here going 11th-16th December??
Also does anybody know how much a taxi would cost from South Central Park, hudson hotel to Woodbury Common.Thankyou0 -
Central park to woodbury common is approx 61 miles and according to the ny.com the taxi fares are:
Initial fare.............$2.50
Each 1/5 mile (4 blocks).$0.40
Each 1 minute idle.......$0.40
Peak surcharge...........$1.00 (after 4pm until 8pm Mon-Fri)
Night surcharge..........$0.50 (after 8pm until 6am)
Tolls....................$extra
Additional riders........FREE
therefore $2.50 + 60 x £0.40 = $26.90 + tolls + tip (oneway), however if you have ever been to NY you will know that the potential of just driving anywhere with no delays is almost impossible, so you could probably easily double that amount.
All the best

Like everybody else NYC hotel hunting. Scaleing search down, slowly. Markymoo, Cosmopolitan, is looking as second favourite, coming in at $1270. I Like the Wolcott at $1470, being more central.
What narks me, is this booking by credit card today thing. Where you are only confirming a booking, as they take payment out on the day you arrive.
We all know rates change, Now $1470 quoted by Woltcott on XE.com, today is £818.00p
When I go in Dec 08, can they charge me any different to what they quoted me today ? also as the quote is in $, if the rate goes down any more; in theroy and practice, I will be paying more in Dec than if I paid today 15th Sept 08. In reverse, if $/GBP rates goes up, I should pay less, yes ?
Personally, I would rather pay now, done, dusted over with. Which brings me to post Markymoo post #92, the Cosmopolitan charges within 24 hours with confirmation e-mail.
Why do most hotels insist on paying later ?
My dates are 10 Dec - 14 Dec 08.
My quotation are from approaching the hotel web sites direct.

ooooh oooh.. don't book cosmopolitan through ebookers... you should be able to get a better price on hotelconxions..
also, you will pay more than $1100, as ebookers only takes £5, and then everything is paid when you leave the hotel, including about 13.5% of taxes, which ebookers don't include..
hotelconxions take payment straight away, but you do get a cheaper price than booking direct with the hotel...

Hello to everyone on the New York thread.
I've come on to this thread to read up on New York as I am planning a surprise trip for my DH's 40th birthday in March 09.
I have to be honest and say I'm actually quite scared at the thought of arriving in the vastness of New York and so far everything I have read only scares me further, But its been a dream of my DH's to go there and he took me to vegas this year for my 40th so I wil get my head round it once I've read, read and read some more.
I haven't booked anything yet, was thinking after xmas might be an ok time to book flights? although BA prices seem quite reasonable just now? thoughts please anyone??
As for the rest of it.... I'll be here for the next while asking and reading to catch up with whats what
Thanks to all those who have shared your knowledge so far....
Regards

Yep that's what happened when I led the family to Harlem on our way to the history and science museum0
