And I am STILL sulking because I was only allowed into Century 21 once, to use the [STRIKE]loo[/STRIKE] sorry Rest Room, and there was never time to go back, and I wasn't allowed anywhere near Macy's or Bloomingdales or Tiffany's or ANYWHERE except the Swatch shop on Grand Central Station and some boring electronics shop and an even more boring guitar shop. Although the guitar shop were very friendly and found me a chair which they parked in front of the air con and showed me where the water cooler was, all of which was very necessary in a heatwave in July!

as for the comments on the subway... erm.. you look for a letter or number.. ;).. also, there is a difference between express and normal trains.. all of which is explained in my guide...

Okey doke please point me in the right direction .....where's your guide....think I need it because we got caught out with this express thing and ended up miles away from where we wanted to be :o I need to get it right for my next trip 'cos it'll just be the kiddywinks and me :D

I have this sorted for next year. OH is flying home from our west coast trip but we're flying onto NY for 3 nights......ooooo Tiffany's here I come :) Oh went very pale when I told him Macy's and Tiffany's are right near our hotel in San Francisco so I'm saving the shopping until he's home ;)

It seems the only books you can now order on entertainment.com are 2009 ones. Presumably they can't be used this year. We're going to NY for a long weekend in 2 weeks. Does anyone have any advice about where to find a 2008 copy? Ebay in the US has one copy but they will only post to the US - it probably wouldn't have arrived here in time even if I did win.
  • Do many bars and restaurants in New York have a dress code? I realise that this is a 'totally depends on where you want to go' kind of a question... I'm looking through places recommended in guide books and am wondering if I'll need to go back to the hotel to change out of jeans and trainers sightseeing clothes into something smarter to go out in the evening.

Also, what kind of time do New Yorkers go out/ places get busy in the evenings?

    Thanks

Thanks for that. So......all the trains going through a 'white dot with a black circle' station will stop there. So I need to look at the black dot stations further along the line to see if the train I'm about to get onto stops at them?
If you have your map, you’re at 42nd Street Times Square, and want to go to Canal Street.
42nd Street Times Square is an express, Canal Street is a local. You will take the 1 train to Canal Street. That is the easiest, but the slowest way. The quicker way, is to take the Express 2 or 3 to 14th street, get off the train, and wait for the local, they way it works is that it always works out quicker to do this.

Ok let me see if I have this right. you suggest the express 2 or 3 to 14th street because they miss out all the locals. Get off at 14th then wait for a local 1 or 9.

I think where I got myself muddled is by looking at the bog numbered/coloured circles at the side of the lines at just hopping on any train...so hopping on a 1,2,3 or 9.

I've given myself many headaches looking at the map in my guidebook so please tell me I'm right and if I am.....then thank you so much :) and I promise not to call any trains by their colours. The yellow train sounds much nicer than the P train though ;)

plenty of places you can go that won't have a dress code... only the high end bars / restaurants will have a dress code.... and tbh.. if you're wearing dark jeans and dark trainers, you'd probably be ok, but white trainers.. ewww... ;)
