Thanks Valli, it's a measure of my MSEness that I can't bring myself to pay for jars! I chucked out all the big ones about four months ago and let go of all the ones I didn't think I'd need for this year's crop of crabapples and OH's marmalade, Kondo-ing them, not realising that a vast amount of free seasonal produce was going to come my way. In total so far, four massive marrows (the biggest was 6.3kgs), roughly 20kgs of beetroot, 50kgs of apples and various other assorted bits and pieces. I'm told this weekly need to clear the charity's hallway will continue until the end of the month at the workshops because their client group just can't deal with this amount and type of food. It was going to the tip if I didn't take it. Fortuantely I have a newish neighbour who is very interested in free food for preserving!
I've chucked the few totally rotten apples at the top of the communal garden where the blackbirds bop about looking for insects. The bruises and mould on them should attract creepy crawlies which will then attract the blackbirds. Yesssssss.
I hate food going to waste and I heart blackbirds.Better is good enough.0 -
Hi all,
Back in the routine - just catching up on strictly, doing the online shop for our half term break, getting bags ready for morning etc.
Will pop tomorrow's list up then off to bed for me. Kiddies were in bed early - they are sooo ready for half term. Four more days...Bossymoo

Its been a fairly lazy day here. DD finished as much of her homework as she could manage. Only 1 maths question (again!) that has her flummoxed, and I haven't a clue either. I blame the way its written
DD watched back to back episodes of Dr Who while ironing, and I baked my Christmas cake at last :rotfl: We have a big one to decorate, 1lb loaf tin x4, and 12 muffin sized ones as I made two batches. I have now gained back the equivalent of an A4 page of my worktop
Might not sound much, but it is in our little kitchen lol
I have lots to do this coming week so I'm going to do my best to keep up with the flying so I can have my childfree weekend housework free as wellI'm concentrating on paid stuff tomorrow so I can run errands Tuesday when DD is out for the majority of the day and still meet my order deadline on Tuesday night.
Off to bed now, I'm hoping another early night will mean I'll be able to get up at 6am tomorrow and get stuck in. Going to write my to do list on my pad ready for the morning as I do my nightly routine. See you on the next thread :wave:Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -

There's no way I would buy jars either Honey Bear - but I think it's a sign of the times that they are readily available. It's a fine balance is jar storage. I ran out when I bought all those Seville Oranges.
I keep looking at the pickling onions and vinegar.
(When I worked in the lab and we had brand new jars in the stockroom lots of us did pickled red cabbage!)
And, in fact, years before that, in a different lab we cleaned out loads of equipment with acid, made little glass gizmos, went foraging at lunchtime and made - in the hotroom - sloe gin and elderberry wine. I STILL don't know how I made it home that Christmas:rotfl: but I didn't drive, then.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016
Thank you Honey Bear0 -

Love it! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Better is good enough.0
