  • My broadband speed is fine, but in South Africa they have stone-age broadband. It is horrifically slow. My problem with Skype is generally more of a software issue on the computer.

You could set up a new Skype to divert only to their mobile/landline call connection 5.6p, per min to a landline is 3.4p and mobile 5.7p on pay as you ho basis.

Thus you avoid a stone age internet connection.

You could also link your mobile number to your Skype account and text at 6.5p per text to SA with the above calling rates, they could also Skype you for free and you pay the Skype divert cost to your mobile.

ie they can call or text you from Skype credit FREE to them if you credit the Skype account from stone age, you contact them back avoiding stone age.
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • diamonds, thanks, that is very helpful. But how do you stop Skype messing up your laptop performance. I had to remove it off my laptop completely at one stage. I have a tablet that I am using it on at the moment, but it still eats resources. We do skype when we can, just not usually a great connection and we spend a lot time not being able to hear each other and getting frustrated.

Anyway, better than using a call-box like we did back in my day!

Firstly whats a call box ? Is that like a cassette thing ? Or is it more of a cd or even a pager or a Hutchison Rabbit ??

This is quite fitting for EE customers 23 years later, who now have more chance of a signal from a oven then the microwavEE reaching them...you cant even make calls where you see a EE logo!

If you are using Windows 8 try desktop version and Metro version.

And use Windows Defender if you are on Windows. Does as good a job as any anti virus without slow downs as its built by Microsoft.

DOH the red box comment, ok so do you what version/s of Windows and the brand/model of your pc and tablet is ? Im starting at basics as well I need to know your PC knowledge level...is it basically just surfing ? lol

probably simpler for the OP to just top up a Giffgaff sim, and install Whatsapp for those with a reasonable data connection.

Calls to South Africa are 3ppm to landlines, 8ppm to mobiles and 8p per text.

But if you add the Skype connection fee to the call cost anything other than long calls are going to be more expensive than Giffgaff, you forgot to mention there is a 5.6p connection charge for the Skype calls.

The tablet I am using is a work one - so not my choice - and it runs Windows RT. It is awful.

My laptop has Vista. It is an old one and I am in the market for a new one, but haven't quite finished my research and decisions on what to buy, so I am limping along for right now. I have not been able to install the latest version of Skype on my laptop at all. That's why I have been using the work tablet for Skype calls. Even before my laptop stopped accepting Skype, it would slow down the system and cause glitches.

Thanks for this, I will certainly give this a try.

I probably have more knowledge than most, but when it gets very technical my eyes cross. I think I judge myself a bit harshly, though, because I come from a computer family. Dad, mom and sister were all programmers, analysts, specialist programmers and such. Compared to them, I am a dunce. :)
Ill help all I can but I need input ;)

    Thank you!!!

I assume calling SA is not a short 1-3 minute call, generally international calls are catch up calls.

And you really should have gone to Specsavers lol ;)

good grief! get windows 8 on that laptop, you are in the market for a new OS for free not a expensive new laptop.

Vista runs slow by itself let alone running programs haha.
