I was interested in something similar but actually would like a convertible. As mentioned earlier you could get a Z4 and not put the roof down. I'm looking at an sdrive35i in the near future which is the 3 litre turbo. There are some early 2009 models for around £15k.
If you're going for the 3.0i Turbo Z4 it'll average high 20s at best.
I'm "assuming" the O/P wants a 2.0i turbo, equating that to reasonable economy.0 -
Why do you want a turbo particularly? I'd go with DKLS' s suggestion of a Cayman.0

The 3.0Si variant will do a lot more than that, but obviously its not an M car.
She had the 3 litre Zed before the M, and yes it would do more, but not much more with her behind the wheel, thats why it wasn't that much of a leap into the M.
I should never have signed her up for the Arnold Palmer driving courses.0 -

The M would be well worth holding on to. I can see them going up in value given the rarity.0 -
Peugeot RCZ?
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
Horrendous cars. My boss toyed between and RCZ and a TT for a while and went with an RCZ as it was cheaper, and regrets it! Hers has spent so much time in the garage, main fault is that when her orange fuel light (you know the one that warns you that you have 50miles worth of fuel left) comes on, her engine goes into limp home mode and she has to take it to Peugeot to reset the ECU thing. Peugeot initially changed the fuel pump, fuel tank and various other bits and pieces, but it kept happening. She asked me to speak to my dad about it (Peugeot mechanic) who said that it is a common fault with the RCZ, and the guidance is "don't let the orange fuel light come on..." which is just utterly ridiculous that you are advised to drive without that safety net when it comes to running out of fuel...
Im not anti-french like some people still are, Peugeot do make some good cars, and i am the kind of person who would be a top spec Leon or Golf over an Audi A3 or 1 series because i think you're paying for a badge, BUT if someone was to ask my opinion between an RCZ, TT, or Z4 as now in the question, I would push them away from Pug...0 -
Thanks for the suggestions so far. From what I remember reading through...
1) My understanding of turbo cars is that you can drive at low revs to avoid using the turbo and obtain higher MPG but if you want to hoon it around some back roads you have the turbo at higher revs to improve performance, effectively giving you the best of both words.
2) RCZ is a no go. Horrific design IMO.
3) Cayman would be a nice choice but I fear I'd be paying more money for the badge to get roughly the same performance as a 370z (so I might aswell get a 370z and put the savings to fuel as motorguy suggested).
4) Scirocco has crossed my mind and is indeed a good shout, but they seem stupidly expensive (German premium price).
motorguy - what is it like living with a 370z. Do you feel like your second home is the petrol station?0 -

Turbo will guzzle fuel like nothing else when on boost, and gives you more to service (usually more often?) as well as being hugely expensive to repair. Fuel economy should be pretty decent when off-boost, as long as it's not something that's using a huge turbo to double the power (Imprezas and the like) you should still find it pretty drivable off-bost.
That said; have a look at the real world figures for turbo Vs non-turbo and you might find there's not that much in it.
You can get similar results from variable cams and the likes too but beyond Honda I'm not sure who else does VTEC equivalents these days.
Anyway, don't rule something out just because it doesn't have a turbo. There's no replacement for displacement :A0 -

Thanks for the info. The hope was that for driving around town or in traffic the fact it isn't using the turbo would bump the MPG up a little, which over the course of a year would soon add up.
That was the only reason for wanting a turbo as opposed to N/A, so if an N/A car can compete with turbo MPG I'd not discount it.
Has anyone got any details on the 370z replacement? I seem to recall reading it was going to be a hybrid? That could be interesting.0
