Yer, ever so easy when you can't speak English and have a roof to pay for to simply walk out of your job.

They managed to travel across Europe, found a roof to live under, got a job at Sports Direct and all without English but you think they couldn't possibly find another minimum wage job?

They don't need to 'simply' walk out either. Just find another job and move on.

Another story on Sports Direct today.

It's Chief Executive has been charged with a criminal offence.

USC (part of Sports Direct) laid off 83 staff members with 15 minutes notice. USC then went into Administration and almost immediately, Sports Direct bought it back through a pre-pack administration.

In the process, they got rid of some debts with supplers who were left hung to dry as were the staff.

It appears the board of USC did not know of it's administration until the day before. However, discussions with the administrators were happening well before this. I.e. there was a plan to cut debts by folding and then Sports Direct purchasing the company back again.

The sad thing is, the maximum penalty is £5,000. Less than a mornings income for the Chief Exec of Sports Direct.

In the meantime, we picked up the tab for the 83 workers who lost their jobs, paying them their redundancies.

Where I work it is frowned upon to call in sick. This really annoys me as the staff turn up with raging fever and colds and spread it on to everyone else. Also turn up with sickness bugs. Yuk It is also frowned upon to take a lunch hour so the staff sit at their desks and eat it. I only work part-time so put up with it as it's in walking distance to where I live, and I think it would be impossible to get another job at the ripe old age of 60. I have been there for 20 years and know for certain they would not give me a job if I applied now. I also have not had a wage rise for 9 years. They only treat the staff well if they are selling a lot and making money. I am glad that a lot of staff are leaving as it seems now there are more jobs for them around. Awful firm.

well look on the bright side, the company will soon go out of business with no staff

Awful firm but because of positive factors you have stayed in their employ for 20 years so it's been pretty good for you then?
Left is never right but I always am.

When I first started it was owned by quite a good company. It's been taken over 3 times since I have been there, each company taking over has been worse. Have looked for other jobs and also do another part-time job but the hours are sporadic. Would have left if my state pension had been forthcoming, buy hey have another 6 years to go. So as the say in they USA "I have to suck it up".

How many jobs would I get offered at the age of 60? Not many I can assure you.

however after some rather questionable DWP WCAs there are rather more people who have been forced back to work, and therefore the chances of people keeling over in work are probably on the rise, as they are with people having to work longer before retirement.

Illustration of this - the bus driver that crashed into the supermarket at the weekend and killed two, is 77 years old... that's just wrong...

Mrs Generali's Grandmother held down two jobs into her 80s and was still working a day a week delivering meals-on-wheels aged 85 and beyond. She was very happy to do the work as it got her out of the house and she was friendly with her regulars.

77 years old, especially these days doesn't necessarily mean incapable, just look at the London marathon results:

    http://results-2015.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com/2015/?pid=list

18 runners aged 70 plus finished in sub 4 hours
37 runners aged 70 plus finished in sub 4.5 hours
80 runners aged 70 plus finished in sub 5 hours

I can tell you that the actual numbers will be higher too, because the auto times do not take into account the fact that you have to virtually walk the first few mins due to the crowding at the start. I do feel really sorry for those that plan to spend their latter years being a potato couch (some even do it at half that age).
Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop
  • I would question the fact that there are many firms that are willing to take on workers over 60 for paid work. Voluteering yes. How this government expects people to keep working longer until they get their pension is laughable if it wasn't so tragic. Where are all these jobs?
