Over the years you've voiced your displeasure at the ethics of Sports Direct, Primark, Tesco, Amazon, Starbucks, Petrol retailers, utility providers, house builders, banks, landlords, Facebook, FTSE 100 companies, boomers, zero hours contracts, Greencore etc.

Just where does a paragon of virtue actually spend their money?

Well it's not difficult to avoid the individual retailers you have listed. I'd agree, I take issue and avoid those 5 companies.

But the second part of the sentence you simply started lumping entire sectors into one. I have never taken issue with petrol retailers or energy companies as a whole across the spectrum. I've never taken issue with "FTSE100 companies" either.

But hey ho, your need to make a vague point always outweighs everything else, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that, once again, you find yourself hugely exaggerating a made up claim to have a pop at nothing. Afterall it's far easier to do what you are doing than it is to discuss the actual topic of threads or the content of said threads.

In answer to your question, my money avoids those 5 companies and goes to the 100's of other companies available on a high street near you.

I'd find it quite hard to avoid Amazon but good for you if you've closed your account in protest. Never stepping in a Tesco even just for a meal deal is good going too.

I've never done Facebook but most people I know seem not to be able to live without it. How are you doing?

Expect to see more & more of that kind of thing as the "living" wage is introduced/increased. Employers aren't going to simply pay people more, they will want more for it and impose tougher conditions.
.....and that's exactly why they need to join a union;)

That people are afraid of calling in sick and go to work ill.

76 ambulances were called to Sports Direct within 2 years. 36 of those calls were for life threatening illnesses.

Now, I don't want to make too much of this, as Sports Direct do have thousands of staff, so going to be a far higher chance of needing emergency assistance.

However, the reason some of the ambulances were called out I believe are key here.

We have the "power of capitalism" thread celebrating capitablism. But here we have one of the results.

it's worth pointing out that Sports Direct operates a strike system, whereby calling in sick (regardless of reason) means you'll face a strike on your record. Any worker who received 6 strikes in 6 months will have their job terminated.

The figures and concerns have been passed on to the Health and Safety Executive for investigation.

Surely in the UK we can do better than this? Or is this all simply fair game?

so if you have a week off, is it 1 strike or 7..?
if its 1 strike you might as well be off for a week then:beer::beer:

well, the goods news is that unemployment is falling and wages are rising, so within a few months Sports Direct will have no staff left and be bankrupt.

The power of the C21st consumer in the information age is quite amazing:

    http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/dec/31/mike-ashley-10m-pay-all-sports-direct-staff-above-minimum-wage

Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley has pledged to spend £10m on raising the pay of all the firm’s employees to above the minimum wage.

However, the Unite trade union was not impressed. Its head of media and campaigns, Alex Flynn, said: “Waaaaaaaaaa. IT'S NO-O-T FAAAAAAAAAAAIR".

In a similar vein, NOMS now having to up the starting pay for new entry Prison Officers by a few thou, to mitigate the current staff retention crisis in the Prison Service. It won't work though.

one would think this was simply a classic case of market pressure (supply and demand determining price) rather than concern over adverse publicity or possible law breaking

    No, it is the latter.
Recruitment doesn't seem to be a problem, it's retention that's woeful. Circa 2K newbies recruited the year to the end of September for a net gain of around 400-500, tells it's own story. People seem to not to want to commit to a lifetime in public service anymore.
