as it was a 40 zone approaching a 30. The speed camera itself was in the 40 zone, as were about 3/4 of the lines with the final 1/4 being in the 30 zone.

I'd be interested to see a location where the camera zone actually overlaps a speed limit change ??

And whilst 34 in a 30 is an offence and prosecutable, as others have said it is below the threshold all? forces use in their decision making.

Go to pepipoo.com and post a scan of your NIP with the exact location details for some proper advice.
  • You were speeding. I'd pay up.

The limit is 30; driving conditions might require that for safety's sake you drive well below that limit.

Did you read the OP ?

As has been said the limit is absolute and even 31 In a 30 can be prosecuted, whether anyone would bother is a different matter, but it is definitely not unenforceable.

    NOt strictly true.
The ACPO state that the equipment used by the police to measure the speed of vehicles has a tolerance of 2 mph at speeds of up to 66 mph and 3% at speeds above 66 mph. (this is in 9.7 of the ACPO guidelines). so any speed measurement at 32 mph or cannot be guaranteed to be accurate enough to prove that the limit was being exceeded.

Most camera partnerships do run by the ACPO guidlines......

I entirely agree with enforcing 30 limits, too many idiots drive about doing 36mph (on their speedo 40mph) on every single god damn road, regardless of the speed limit, regardless of road conditions and they're such a danger to other road users that I believe they should be punished further than the current extent of the law.

If however OP really was in a 40 limit, then there will undoubtedly be numerous drivers in the same boat right now.

If you don't get a resolution, go to the local papers, this will certainly be something they'd be interested in.

It is highly unusual for a speed camera to be so close to a speed limit boundary, especially to have the calibration lines overlapping two distinct speed limit zones.

If you have watertight evidence that your car was indeed in a 40mph zone, then please do attend court and plead not guilty.

I just hope you haven't made a mistake and confused a 30 reminder sign for the start of a 30 zone. Like others have said, if you give us the location, we can be more definite in our advice.

Well, the thread is now 2 days old and there's been no reappearance of the OP to tell us where this odd set up is, so I suspect we're never going to know now.

    A whole 2 days!
It's what may well be one of the last sunny weekends this year and many people have more to life than spending all of their free time on internet forums.
Another point is the OP stated that they were new to the forum so they might not have any clue as to how quickly replies appear.

Yep. The OP did not reduce speed adequately enough (whilst still in the 40 mph zone) to prepare for the transition into the 30 mph zone.

You read it but obviously didn't understand it.

I challenged this and got them to send me the photos and my car can clearly be seen before the big 30 sign and the big 30 in white paint on the road.
The OP's car was not in the 30 mph zone when the photograph was taken.
