5p bag charge - your views

The law is a bit vague. The Governments website says that they don't need to charge for bags with uncooked meat in them. But it isn't clear. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/carrier-bag-charges-retailers-responsibilities#bags-you-dont-have-to-charge-for
Thanks for the info. M&S are using the "get-out" that because their uncooked chicken (or fish and other meat) comes wrapped in plastic which (according to them) will not leak they can therefore charge 5p for either a small or large bag.0 -
Tesco are unsure about charging for the bag I put my chicken in. Some stores charge and some don't. When I challenge the charge I'm told they have to charge so rather than have an argument with staff member I just pay but it would be nice to know what is the legal standing on this.0

The bottom line is supermarkets can charge for any bag if they want to. They have the choice of giving you a free bag for raw meats but most don't.0 -
I have to say that I think the 5p is a good thing; I've started remembering to take a bag with me when I go shopping.
When I go to a particular supermarket, I do tend to try and use a different one's bags though!0 -
I think people are getting use to it now thankfully.0

I forgot my bag this morning in Morrisons, too much to carry, so just took it all out to the car in the hand basket, put it onto a bag in my car and left the basket in the trolley bay!
I will NOT pay 5p for a bag.
If I'd not had the car I would have crammed as much as I could into my handbag.I Hate Jobsworths!!!0 -
People were up in arms as the Asda I was in this morning had no bags.
Most of these people will never bring their own bags and if the bags were £5, still not bring their own bags.
Why are some people not bothered to bring their own bags?
As for those that use the 5p carrier bags as rubbish bags - yes there are at least two tenants that use the same communal bin area as me use these 5p bags (such as the new Sainsburys 5p bags and the Tesco bags with the various round things) as bin liners. It hasn't gone into their brains that its cheaper to buy a roll of kitchen bin liners. So keep reusing 3-4 bags and buy the kitchen liners. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I thinks it is a good idea for our planet. I always take bags now when going shopping.
I do think shops will lose out now though. It has made it easier for shop lifters. All a shop lifter has to do now is purchase an item, walk out the shop and get rid of the item, then go back into the same shop, pick up another of the same item and walk out. If questioned they have the original receipt as proof of purchase.
I also saw something really funny last week at Asda is Basildon. A couple walked out of Asda with a shopping trolley full, they went to their car and lifted the whole trolley into the back of their 4x4 and drove off. I know this is stealing but it was funny at the time.0
