5p bag charge - your views

Which will be a lot of good in Morrisons (and, no doubt, others) whose 'wrapped' meat frequently leaks.
As I've said before, it would be interesting to compare the 'environmental impact' of treating a few cases of c.difficile with that of carrier bags. Given that we have been told most chicken packaging is contaminated on the outside, I'm not sure the ' bag for life' has been very appropriately named.
I use bags for life for most of my shopping and saved single use for meat. When they run out, I'll either buy a 5p bag or purchase them in bulk.0 -
I went to the chippy for a chip butty and sausage with gravy wrapped. They put it in a nice strong white vest carrier bag without extra charge.
Bag will get re-used as a bin liner. The world has not come to an end yet.0 -

Absolutely. I've washed the bag I had the chicken in, but I doubt many people will bother; plus it it's going to be a PITA to do every time.
I'll have to remember to bring one of my bought-from-ebay-single-use-carrier-bag when I want to buy meat so that the bag then just goes as bin liner afterwards, less hassle than washing stuffNow free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
It has been two weeks since the carrier bag charge has been in law. I used to take a shopping bag to the shops some years ago. But some of the store staff thought then, all a person was doing was to pinch items when bringing ones own shopping bags. So I stopped taking my own shopping bags to the stores. Now it is nice again to be able. Plus store staff accepting shoppers have to take in heavy duty bags for shopping. The one thing I have noticed in most stores is the removal of the free carrier bags from the tills. Stores are trying to get shopper to buy the bag for life ones. I prefer the heavy jute bags for my shopping. I am going back a lot of years, remembering taking a shopping basket shopping. Now back in time to help protect the planet. It has taken too long to do this though. The only thing is I am as guilty as most. As I used too many carrier bags. I used to use these for bin bags. This is one item I have had to buy since the carrier bag charge has been in.0

When working in a store the only time I though someone with their own bags was trying to steal is when they put items directly into their own bags. Fill a basket or trolley then use your own bags at the till and its fine. Even if I use the scan-as-you-go at Waitrose I still put my own bag inside a basket so it doesn't look as weird.0 -
What you need to watch out for is grannys who put the shopping straight into their granny-type shopping trolleys. They don't always leave via the checkouts.0

I wouldn't buy meat or chicken pack that was leaking as that means it is not sealed and the contents will have started to spoil.
Our coop give you a clear veg bag to put chicken packs in. Tesco did also when asked.0 -

The trouble is you can't really tell if the package is leaking or contaminated on the outside, we take bags from the vegetable area put the meat in those.0 -

I've never seen a chicken in hermetically sealed packaging. They are normally just wrapped in plastic but are not airtight.
A leaking meat pack would only be a problem if was meant to be hermetically sealed and vacuum packed - for example a steak. A leak would then affect the shelf life.0 -

Somehow you seem to have missed all the news stories on the subject. Many (if not most) chickens in the UK are contaminated and so is the packaging they come it, ergo, so is the bag you put it in.0
