True, but if I didn't use bin bags I would need to frequently wash the kitchen bin and the wheelie bin. I prefer to contain the waste.

If you bag your waste, then your wheelie bin should be completely emptied on collection day. If your waste is unbagged then small amounts can stick (or freeze) to the inside of the bin when it is emptied; festering, causing smells, and attracting flies and maggots.

I also know that contained waste is much more pleasant for the collectors to handle.

I think it's okay for the shops to charge for carrier bags, nothing that Aldi and Lidl haven't done since opening their stores in the UK.

I hate carrier bags I prefer to use my own material bags, my family buy me a bag when they go on holiday and use them for my shopping.

I used to often refuse bags even before the charge, as if I already had a rucksack or something I don't need another bag. If the cashier didn't ask if I wanted a bag I would have to tell them and very often they didn't hear me. At least if the cashier asks the question do you need a bag it gives you a good oppourtunity to say no.

There is now I've always used carriers as bin bags, so now I have to buy some - same amount of plastic... I'm in a flat, refuse must be bagged to go in the communal bins (doesn't bear thinking about otherwise ...urgh)

As I aside, I thought that when buying uncooked meat, you could get a carrier bag for free? On my last trip to the supermarket, I was told that I'd have to pay for a bag to put my uncooked chicken in - yes I know it's packaged but I prefer to keep that kind of stuff separate, and preferably not in a bag I'm going to reuse for fresh food later; I'd rather not have to wash bags between each supermarket trip.

Edit: and if they really want to do something about the amount of plastic about, why don't they target the ludicrous packaging that most stuff comes in nowadays?

Edit 2: I'd also rather "abandon" some of my shopping if I haven't got enough bags with me rather than pay for a bag. No, not because it costs 5p but because the shop is (allegedly anyway) donating my 5p to charity, thus making it tax-deductible for them... I'd rather give 5p to a charity of my choice, go with gift-aid so that they get a little bit more and it's then tax-deductible for me

Think things are now calming down about the 5p charge.

No new 'shock' news reports from Daily Mail for at least 3 days now.

What is everybody doing with the many bags that their food already comes in (such as bread or fruit)? I use them to put in my bin and have one small bag's worth of rubbish every week (for 2 adults). I haven't used plastic carrier bags (for groceries,clothes, homewares etc) for about 18 years now. I don't understand why some people are having such a hard time managing with this new system!
I for one am over the moon that this charge has finally come in. No more quickly trying to whip my own bags out before the assistant stuffs my shopping into plastic bags.
Also what is it with people that seem to have to put a few bananas into a small plastic bag? That bag is probably chucked away the moment they unpack their stuff at home!

I've taken the rules about free bags for raw meat as referring to those small plastic bags that traditional butchers will put your 1lb of loose mince or four pork chops in ....If the meat is packaged in clingfilm / on a styrofoam tray as in most supermarkets then they're not under any obligation to give you any other packaging free

Which will be a lot of good in Morrisons (and, no doubt, others) whose 'wrapped' meat frequently leaks.

As I've said before, it would be interesting to compare the 'environmental impact' of treating a few cases of c.difficile with that of carrier bags. Given that we have been told most chicken packaging is contaminated on the outside, I'm not sure the ' bag for life' has been very appropriately named.
