I am fully supportive of the idea, but the money must be used on renewable technology or initiatives such as wind farms, solar tech or recycling initiatives.

Not true, boots charged 7p for a large carrIer bag and Next charge 5p,

Yes it is true! Boots and Next charge for bags because the WANT to, not because the HAVE to.

I think we've tended to be lazy, and the 5p (which is nothing really these days) is just a reminder about the impact of bags.

I know it's focused my mind and I do tend to make the effort to take the bags out of the car boot and into the shop, rather than getting to the tills and thinking "oh, forgot my bags again".

However, the shops may be losing out, as I have found myself not getting something if it's not going to fit into my bag.

I still have concerns about now needing to buy bin liners- although someone advised on one of these threads they were better for the environment than bio-degradable carriers- but being in a shop and seeing pretty much everyone use their own bags has been wonderful. Even I only did it 75% of the time. Has really made me more in favour than I was before.

Really, why not just pay the 5p?

    .

Or, more precisely: 'the alleged impact of bags'.

I think the supermarkets may have to get more fruit and veg bags from now on, I've found myself using these if I forget a bag and I'm buying smaller things. could even double/triple them if the item/s heavier.

I get a couple to put in my handbag when I go.

They should be charging you for them if you pit anything else in them.

Yes, though many are thrown away as rubbish.

You do get charged for these unless you have loose fruit or vegetables. I picked up a bag of reduced fruit yesterday which was covered in sticky stuff so I put it in one of the little bags. When I got to check out the lady who served me said that I could not have it or she would have to charge me 5p. I did not want the sticky stuff over my other shopping so asked if I could take the fruit out of the sealed bag and put it in the loose bag. Her answer was no so I said I did not want the fruit as it would make everything else sticky.
