Quantity of bags given away in England has been around 8 billion a year.

8 BILLION bags, and that doesn't seem to bother you at all.

Personally I'll increase my bag use by starting to ask for them with home delivery. It'll take around 80 bags per delivery at a cost of 40p for them all. Cheap as protest votes go.
Also ridiculous as protest votes go.

Correct, there's no significant reason for it to bother me. They are a very efficient method of moving goods around, then use a final time as a rubbish bag, saving one of those for each bag provided.

That will teach all that annoying wildlife a lesson!
Wildlife aren't annoying, they are something to appreciate, along with some perspective on the relative costs imposed on consumers for the tiny benefits being delivered. If consumers are going to be taxed an extra £106 million there are ways to deliver far more benefit to wildlife than this.

You might want to compare the per-bag cost of bin bags vs carrier bags. You'll find that the 40p charge is cheaper than the bin liners. It's an efficient protest vote that will both save me money and reduce the drop in bag use. A win all around.

The bag tax isn't an efficient or effective environmental measure. It's a political move designed to make consumers feel that a government is doing something productive for the environment, without it costing the government money directly, since consumers bear the costs. Political theatre.

All very good points and directly put. Sadly, you are arguing with those who use feelings in place of thoughts, Facts are useless. Governments love people like that - they are so easy to fool.

I wish the media will stop using the term 'supermarket' instead of shops when they talk about the bag charges as some ignorant people think it only applies to supermarkets.

I work in a shop which isn't classed as a supermarket, but my employer employs more than 250 employees - therefore we have to charge. So far, I had about 5 customers that said the bags should be free as the shop isn't a supermarket. I quote an estimated number of employees that work for the shop and say any organisation that employs more than 250 people has to charge. That has quietened them, for now

Obviously, the vast majority of carrier bags issued has been from supermarkets. As if a customer spent £120, they probably used 15-20 carrier bags, depending on items size and weight.

Can see the litmus paper being lit on Saturday as many people only shop on Saturdays and it will be the first Saturday with the bags being 5p.

Not sure what sort of shop you work in, but I can see there will be some confusion about having to pay for a bag when you buy an item of clothing, etc., I think people will quickly get used to reusing bags for their supermarket shopping but finding a bag suitable for your new lingereie, posh frock, etc., might be a different matter, regardless of the cost?!

? Have you been ? That's a weird thing to do with litmus paper. Technically posted in the afternoon but only one minute into the afternoon - that's far too early to be affected:)!

Endless posts trying to belittle people who are not against this. You are gutted at the thought of buying bin liners :rotfl:. Life really is too short.
