5p bag charge - your views

Wales introduced the bag charge four years ago, not sure when N.Ireland and Scotland introduced theirs?
I don't remember all this tears and anguish then!
Scotland was October 2014.
I've not bought a plastic bag from a supermarket since then. I think it's a great idea. Years ago people always had their shopping bag, and far fewer people had cars, and they still managed.
I don't see why there's a fuss. It'll become second nature in no time.0 -
I feel sorry for self scan staff at Asda. They hang the 5p bags over one arm. Because of this, they are restricted to use the bag arm freely.
If Asda continue to ask their colleagues to do this, the colleagues will get arm conditions and may need time off sickThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Are you sure it's not just in your local Asda? I've been in a few and never seen any staff holding onto plastic bags on the self-scanners. First day and all that, they might find a better way to organise themselves. In my local Asda the staff just get them if asked for, but believe me, hardly any people ask for them.0 -

Can see it now, repetitive 5p bag arm syndrome.;)The more I live, the more I learn.
The more I learn, the more I grow.
The more I grow, the more I see.
The more I see, the more I know.
The more I know, the more I see,
How little I know.!!0 -
This is nothing to do with the environment for the government, it is about a nice little VAT earner. The reason the businesses have to report what they are doing with the profit they make is solely so that if they give to a worthy cause which the government also give to the gov will reduce their giving. So if your local supermarket asks for suggestions for good causes make sure you pick ones which are not gov funded.0

I would take it a step further and get rid of plastic carrier bags altogether.0

Including bags for life?
Have you tried folding up a hessian bag and slipping it in your pocket?0 -
I got charged for a plastic bag despite bringing my own! She just automatically put it on my bill, dread to think how many other people have been charged and did not even notice.
In essence I do like the idea and if you charged to little people would not bother recycling , however there are some strange exceptions to the rule which will take some getting used to.Don’t put it down - put it away!

yes , and yes no problem.
Also why does it have to be hessian ? Take a few cotton ones that easily roll up into a small ball. ( and are also easily washable if they get dirty )
Seems to me that everyone objecting to this charge are just "being difficult" for the sake of it , and inventing problems where non exist0 -

Which is amusing as that's exactly the way the whole scheme seems to me. Another layer of expensive bureaucracy and inconvenience for retailers and customers, money dished out to pretend charities and very little actual improvement in what was already a problem you would need a microscope to find.
Still, if it keeps neo-puritans and the conspicuously pious happy...0
