They may have transfered the registration number from one car to the other, had new plates made up for the car in use and just left the old vehicle with its plates on.

I do not think this is possible.

Yes, you could transfer the registration number from car A to car B. However, car A would then need to either have a new registration number issued to it and a SORN declared or a certificate of destruction from an authorised ELV dismantler issued to say that it had been destroyed and was not therefore in need of a new registration being issued. Clearly it's not the later, so it should have a different registration number from car B afixed to it and a SORN. This would apply whether they had transferred numbers between vehicles or not.

Clearly there is something amiss here that should be reported to the DVLA and the police.

    It's perfectly possible.

If you owned car A and had been assigned a new registration number (as would happen), but its sitting quietly in a garden not doing anything and never going near a road, would you shell out £20 for a shiny new set of number plates for no reason whatsoever?

If a car is SORN'd, it doesn't need to meet any roadworthiness standards, and that includes the display of a number plate. If it was a requirement, one of my cars that's currently SORN'd will have problems, as there's no front end on it at all!

Probably one is "off the road" but is being driven around on the other one's number plate so that only 1 lot of motor tax has been paid. If both are definitely being driven I would report it to the DVLA.

The fact one may not be being driven is irrelevent. It still needs reporting.

Did you just think about what you've written? Having the same number plate on both cars would need you to buy a new set of plates.

    Er... um...

Well... if car B was a new car, the garage would have had the plates made up for the car, assuming they handled the plate transfer.

There. I think I got away with it.

This is called twinning and seems to be happening everywhere, when you pst pics of your car or bike online make sure you cover up you reg or next time it may be your own car that you spot with the same reg

Do you do the same when you park at the local supermarket?

I've just done a cherished number transfer from my mums old 94 Corsa to my Dads Merc. Got new plates made up because the old ones were manky and we've left the old plates (with the same reg) on the Corsa which is SORN on the driveway.

    Hi

I spotted this on two different cars in my local supermarket car park. I saw the cars almost daily so i assume the owners must work there. I checked the reg on the dvla website and it was registered to one of the cars but not the other. The other was actually a company van.

I called the dvla out of curiosity, they told me that it had nothing to do with them, they couldnt do anything about it and that it was a police matter.

Called the police, who were suprisingly very interested. A couple of days later the van had changed its plates. Although, i have to add that the van is still in the car park. It changes car park spaces every now and then. But it has an put of date tax disc.

If a car was declared SORN can it be kept in a supermarket car park?
