Is there any legal way of this happening?

Am not looking to do this myself, but have noticed that a family near me appear to have 2 cars with the same number :confused::confused:

    Report it to the DVLA.

Has it got the same number on both cars at the same time? Are they personalised in some way or just normal registrations?

This is called twinning and seems to be happening everywhere, when you pst pics of your car or bike online make sure you cover up you reg or next time it may be your own car that you spot with the same reg

Yes, both at the same time, and they look normal to me.
  • Probably one is "off the road" but is being driven around on the other one's number plate so that only 1 lot of motor tax has been paid. If both are definitely being driven I would report it to the DVLA.

They are different makes and colours. One is parked in the garden at the moment and the other is driven regularly.

Following a link elsewhere on this forum, I typed the number into a page at the RAC website, and a description of the one that is driven regularly came up. It looks as though Garnet_Gem has the right idea. I shall watch and see if the one in the garden is moved.

Is it a slightly unusual registration ? They may have transferred it from the "parked" car to the other, and bought new plates for it.

You can buy registrations that are fairly similar. Could they have doctored the plates to make them look alike?

    For instance:

    CS54 ABC

    Looks like:

    C554 ABC

It could be that the one in the garden is off the road and possibly on SORN.

As long as its not being driven on the public highway (and parked on private land) with identical plates, then I'm pretty sure you can put any plate you like on the car.
