Why would anyone lie about this?

But why should it be a "cause"? If I choose to bottle feed or breastfeed what has that got to do with anyone else? I breastfed all 4 of mine, one till he was 3, the nasty snidey remarks I got were horrible. Guess what, he is 6ft 3in very healthy and very well adjusted, why did anyone need to make judgements? What right did they have to make judgements, none that I can see.

It has nothing to do with anyone, I agree. Which is why mums should be able to chose to bottle-feed without being made to feel like they have failed. That's what I mean.

I agree that breast is best, but it made me very depressed, I hated it and was much happier once my son was on the bottle. I agree it should be a choice, but mums who chose to bottle feed should also be supported in their choice, not made to feel second rate or worse.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • A minority of very vocal breast feeders do make bottle feeders feel bad, it's true.

And telling somebody to just express their milk for a more convenient time isn't feasible. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has tried and tried to express and got nothing, while other mums have no trouble and can even express by hand.

We all need to stop beating each other up about our choices - breast or bottle, public or discreet, working or stay at home, etc. and this woman's lie does nothing to help.

But people do exactly the same to breastfeeding mums, and to be honest your comment referring to breastfeeding !!!!! wasn't really necessary was it. I don't think either side has a monopoly on being judgemental and two wrongs don't make a right.

I wouldn't dream of commenting on someone elses choice and don't think they should comment on mine. I had plenty of people saying I was some sort of fanatic because my youngest fed till he was 3, the others were all weaned somewhere between six months and a year but that wasn't right for him, so what? I also had people implying I was some sort of pervert, I bet no one said that to you.

I couldn't agree more. Thanks for the commonsense.

Just to add I was one of those mums who could express easily but all my expressed milk went to the local maternity hospital for seriously ill babies who needed it so I would never have used it for my own children. A midwife used to collect it every other morning on her way to the hospital, she was nicknamed The Milkmaid. If I remember correctly I think I was paid 12p a pint for it and the hospital wouldn't accept the milk if you didn't take the money. I think they had calculated the cheapest food to replace the calories used to produce a pink of milk and gave you that to ensure your own baby wasn't missing out, well something like that anyway.

My SIL told me that it was akin to incest. She said this while I was actually breastfeeding too :-(
  • Facebook fame! Just wanted her post shared 300,000 times I expect. Sad, really. The poor security man that was carted off to the police over it too :(

I wouldn't want to see someone breast feeding in public. Even though someone may have a legal right to do it, I think it's a bit selfish to do so in middle of shops or cafes. At least do it discreetly.

Yes it's natural, but so is having a poop or making love.

So you'd prefer to hear a baby cry because its hungry when you're sitting in a cafe, than for the mum to feed it?

You eat - how is that not similar to having a poop or making love. Do you eat in public? That's all the baby is doing.

    Disagree totally...

Things that I mind far more include people smoking in parks; driving cars and making noise and pollution along streets where people are trying to stroll; mobile phone use; "music" blaring from shops. Deal with all these before even thinking about restricting the right of mothers to care for their babies.

Awful isn't it. bottlefeeders always seem to moan about people being nasty to them but I really think breastfeeders get more abuse, certainly the abuse they get is nastier (in my opinion) as your post illustrates. Hope you didn't let her put you off, these sort of comments are really damaging to your confidence when you are trying to establish feeding.
