It's of no significance in my life. If the entire German population reverts to making sausages and cuckoo clocks, it will not concern me in the slightest, so your well worn phrase of doom and gloom does not apply. It's just of passing interest that you're able to dismiss so easily what those involved seem to regard as very important.
Its "very important" to most people as its in the news. Its very important to VW as its costing them a fortune, and its very important to the government as they can fine VW and get a big wadge of cash in.
Is it import "really" to the man in the street. No, not really. Nor is it important to me.
People are just reading what the newspaper prints and what put on forums by doom and gloom merchants and expect the worst.qwert_yuiop wrote: »
The difference here from the Toyota and ford botch ups is that this is a fraud, already resulting in a class action in the USA and similar action in the eu and member states. Whatever correction to engine combustion is required is likely to result in decreased performance or higher fuel consumption, causing some damage to sales figures.
Thats a company committing fraud. I dont think people really care. In the same way as they dont care that Apple use child labour to produce their latest shiny trinkets, and that Starbucks or Amazon dont pay a button of tax here.qwert_yuiop wrote: »
If vw undergoes its own Untergang, tough, I don't care. If it looks like it's likely to recover, I'll keep tracking it as a possible investment.

I'd just have thought someone who's so confident that the whole thing is hysteria might have put his money where his opinion is, looking forward to a huge profit.
I didnt say the whole thing was hysteria, i said there was hysteria surrounding it now, and people were getting "hysterical" for no good reason.
Very different. I didnt dismiss the issue as non existent or hysteria.
And like yourself, and as i've already confirmed, IF when it all bottoms out, theres an opportunity, i might take a punt.

To be honest, does anyone care?
Air pollution in London kills nearly 10.000 people a year, but we're not in London...

Hold on for that cheap Audi. Wir leben Autos, ja?
As i said, and has been said, they'll be no direct impact financial or otherwise on the owners of the cars.
And already its been confirmed they wont be made to pay extra road tax.

So, of the things i said :-
No increase in tax. CONFIRMED
Car wont fail MOT - not tested anyway.
Corrective action plan required by VW - STARTED.
Big fine for VW - highly likely.
Hows your doom and gloom list looking?0 -

Exactly.
Apple were outed for using child slave labour and it hasnt impacted sales.
Amazon avoid UK tax and everyone still uses them.
Starbucks avoid UK tax and everyone still uses them.
Whats a little bit of emissions fiddling between friends, eh?0 -

As I said, neither doom nor gloom - the opposite in fact, with some delight and relief (Schadenfreude even) at learning the Germans can be just as devious and corrupt as the Southern Europeans they've been sneering at over the debt debacle.
Who expected an increase in tax? Not me, and I don't care since I don't own one. I have to say I wouldn't jump to buy one yet until it's all explained.
I've just read that they're "committed to having a plan" to correct the defect. Well, that's a start, I'll accept.
Too early to say what happens next, as you know. What does the corrective action involve? What did the swindle even involve? Will there be a decrease in performance of these vehicles? We don't know - it could lead to a move away from diesel for cars if it's found to be significant. The reputational damage however is colossal.
And I don't care. Do you?“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -

You seemed to care enough to start a thread on it, and ask specifically for my view on it.0 -

Thats quite a lot of back tracking. In post #14 on this thread you said you believed cars would fail MOT because of this, and you also insinuated that used values would be heavily impacted, neither of which seems even remotely likely and only fuels the hysteria.
You also said on another thread that you believed VW owners should be entitled to com-pen-say-shun - are you back pedalling on that too?0 -

MOT - bad call
Used values - let's wait. I'd still say some downward pressure. I wouldn't buy one till this settles out. I can't be the only one.
Comp - etc. - yes, why not? Considering all the other claims and counterclaims that result in payouts for the supposedly traumatised and distressed, I'd be amazed if this doesn't result in ads and junk emails offering "no win, no fee" services to all disgruntled owners. "Do you own a smoky, toxic diesel vw? Call us now at 0800-cash4gas."
We'll have to wait and see. Anyway England are out of the World Cup, so the next few days' papers are going to be full of articles recommending that Stuart Lancaster be hanged.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0
