Norton Support now say it is not meant for Windows XP SP2, but with SP3 :(

The website from the shop I bought it from did NOT say requires SP3:

Nor does it say that anywhere on the back of the card either:

So, the shop AND Norton themselves are in breach of Trading Standards not fit for purposes act, despite it working seemingly fine, and live updating and running scans under Windows XP SP2.

It just won't load any secure HTTPS pages in Chrome....

  • You could be onto something there. We declined installing the NIS Chrome extension upon installation.

And to reinstall it, through the help pages, you have to click on a SECURE HTTPS link which of course won't load in Chrome!

Try disabling the Chrome extension first and restarting chrome to check if you can access HTTPS sites. If that works then you know where is the problem! let me know what happens?

Maybe be another you have another extension that disables HTTPS! try looking at what extensions you have installed and disable them one by one!

Another solution is to check if you have HTTPS disabled for third party apps on chrome!

Click the menu icon Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
Select Settings.Click the Show advanced settings... link.
Click Content Settings... in the "Privacy" section.
In the "Cookies" section of the dialog that appears, make sure Allow local data to be set is selected to allow both first-party and third-party cookies.
    Click Close.
Then, to enable SSL, in the "HTTPS/SSL" section, make sure the Check for server certificate revocation checkbox is selected.

Sure you are not using XP SP3, SP2 support was dropped years ago.

Besides, nothing on your PC really should be able to scan HTTPS pages as the way to do it requires a trusted root certificate that intercepts all your all your browsing data.

This in itself represents a security problem (depends if you trust norton) and who's to say Norton are not harvesting personal data ?

Thanks, cant try that until back round to where the Win XP SP2 PC is, but will try it, cheers.

Nope, definately Windows XP SP2 only. Tried installing SP3 previously about a year ago and it totally killed the PC, wouldn't boot at all. Had to do a System Restore point.

    So, to recap:

Uninstalled and then installed new version of NIS on my Win 7 desktop PC = fine.

Uninstalled and then tried to download/install NIS on our Win XP SP PC from my account in Norton = wouldn't download (not compatible with your OS).

Chat with Norton later reveals it is meant for SP3 and above so blocked from downloading.

Contact Norton assistant who spent 2 hours tinkering with the SP2 PC remotely and got it to download and install NI.

He changed some key in registry from 200 to ??? but it did install it. He could not get it to connect to the Norton server at all to update the trial version he downloaded. Plus even he couldn't get any https pages up, so told us to download and run Norton Removal Tool then disconnected chat!

Ran NRT and it installed it and it worked and updated and applied patches.

Leading to us not being able to connect to any secure HTTPS sites in Chrome only. And AdBlock won't update either (disabling it makes no difference).

Ran Malwarebytes Antimalware and it found a malicious IP address but can't find out what it did with it.

He also copied and pasted some echo / hosts info while he was remotely accessing the PC.

Not sure what he has done other than fool the PC into thinking it now has SP3 installed.

    Jeez, my head hurts :(

I would recommend installing a firewall and blocking that malicious IP address. Since XP is very vulnerable to malicious malware attacks! but first try and fix the chrome HTTPS issue!

I don't think its the hosts file! as that will affect the way your OS behaves when it come to connecting to the internet with other browsers and software, but Firefox is working fine!

    XP is a headache!

Even more insecure (and incompatible) XP then. No updates for XP SP2 since 2010. It's a rather sorry mess, take it out back and shoot it.

XP SP2/SP3/SP4/SP5 .... If XP was a person I will shoot it in the head! :wall:

Thanks again. We had Windows Firewall ON while we were trying to download/install NIS. Now that it has apparently installed and setup, Windows Firewall has been turned OFF (not by us). Assumed NIS would have taken over as the default firewall?

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware must have blocked the malicious IP address, or what's the point in it detecting in and doing nowt with it?

Are people on my side or the Norton remote access guy here? He deleted some McAfee files, folders and registry files without even asking us. It must have been included with this PC ages ago but we never used it/installed it.

And can someone alter the registry to make the PC think it now has SP3? He 100% definitely changed a registry entry from 200 to something else? Maybe 200 is SP2 to 300 for SP3?

At least we can still access Yahoo email, Twitter, Google search etc (that use https) still in Firefox.

This must be Chrome issue surely?

Can't see any settings in NIS to stop it scanning https links as other people seem to suggest while searching....

Making it think it's sp3 isn't going to magically give you 4 years worth of patches and will probably only succeed in making your system even more unstable.
