General Query - you can have a Windows 7 PC from eBay for around £50 that is probably faster than your current computer, and definitely more secure. Is there some specific software on your computer that will only run on XP and not newer versions of Windows? Even if there is, make sure to get Windows 7 PRO and use a virtual machine to run XP inside. Your OS is WAY out of date and not fit for the internet. I'd also try getting rid of Norton completely (try AVAST instead).
  • Not had chance to use the Win XP PC yet, but I did google this and this is exactly what the Norton tech guy (amongst other tinkering) did to make our PC say it has SP3 installed:

If I want to try and install SP3 again (with a system restore point first!), do I change the value BACK from 300 to 200, and reboot so the PC is back to just the SP2 it had all along?

Fair point but don't trust a second hand PC, there could be ANYTHING on the hard drive, and we're not taking any chances.

Seen this, is it any good (for a NEW PC) for just over £200 with Windows 7 Home PREMIUM included:

Sorry I wasn't clear. Any second hand computer I buy, and even some new ones, get wiped straight away. If you're paranoid, you can use something called DBAN to really wipe it. If you're really paranoid, remove and replace the disk.
You're at far more risk running an XP SP2 computer on the internet, than wiping someone else's hard drive.
That computer looks alright if you've got £200 to spend, maybe some others can find you some good deals. AMDs are generally slower and warmer, but also cheaper, than Intels at the moment, but that's not really going to matter much in a desktop. I'd rather have 8GB if you're going to keep this one, for the same money...
  • There are far many better options than the one you suggested!
The PC you suggested is good, but I am sure its going to be noisy and bulky!
If you need it only for browsing and word processing then I would suggest that you got for a fan-less mini PC with almost the same price or cheaper!
unfortunately I can't post a link on this site yet! but you can try amazon and search for fanless pc a lot of things will come up!

    Finally got it working!

Uninstalled Norton Security, ran Norton Removal Tool.

Changed registry entry from 3000 back to 2000 so system has original Windows XP Service Pack 2!

Took nearly 2 hours to unpack, install and do a clean up during SP3 installation but touch wood, all is now fine - except this old PC is even slower now.

Re-installed NS from our account and did a Live Update and it now all works, and we can access Google search, Yahoo email, and Twitter etc (all the https:// that were blocked before!) and AdBlock works again in Chrome.

    :T

Thanks for suggestions along the way people! :rotfl:

It works in firefox and not chrome because firefox doesn't listen to "internet options" as defined in the control panel, whereas chrome and obviously IE do ..

You need to go into internet options, to the advanced tab, and make sure all the options are ticket next to where it says "use TLS" and SSL (there will be 4 or 5 of them - near the bottom)

When you install Norton (absolutely hate hate hate it - please get rid of it) , it unchecks a few options that it deems to be insecure.
