It does mean I get out of the kitchen a lot earlier than I used to! It's easier to keep things clean as you go. While you're still cooking you can be putting the bits you've used for prep in dishwasher, so only have plates left to sort after meal.

It keeps the kitchen tidier, because as I said, can put utensils and things away in there as you go, leaving more space for sorting out the meal. Especially useful if you're doing something like a roast dinner.

I think this is what I like most about having one, that there aren't dishes piling up by the sink looking messy and cluttered waiting to be washed. When they're used, bam, straight in the dishwasher out of sight.

I heard a man interviewed on the radio who redid his kitchen with two dishwashers - that way, he never had to unload them.

The one with the clean stuff in acted as a cupboard while the other was filled up prior to being washed.

My friends mum did this in the 80s.

I had a dw late 80s, after I moved I didn't bother again. Then about 10 years ago I was going in for a op & would be out of action for about 6 weeks, so my (then) husband bought a dw!!!
I wouldn't be without one again.
They have moved on loads since the 80s.

    I wouldn't be without mine.

My time is far to valuable to be standing at the sink washing and drying after every meal and I really couldn't stand either the dirty breakfast/lunch things sitting on the side all day or sitting on the drainer drying. It all goes in the DW throughout the day and gets put on after dinner, all neat, quick and tidy.

Hell, I won't even go on holiday to a property with no DW!

Plus it keeps the kitchen tidy, no dirty dishes building up in the sink.

I agree. A friend of mine swears she'd have a dishwasher even if it wasn't plumbed in so she could hide the dirty dishes away.

Completely agree. To me it ruins a meal if you have to wash up afterwards.
  • If it worked I would love it! I've got a Howdens kitchen and the appliances are bit temperamental. Dishwasher leaves a fine grit of crumbs over everything.
  • I'm another fan of the dishwasher. Our house already had one when we moved in and it's great. I don't find unloading it a problem because it doesn't take very long. I usually unload while waiting for something else (the microwave, toaster, kettle etc) so it's not a big deal. I do like the look of a slimline dishwasher though as ours takes up the same amount of space as a washing machine.

When we moved 14 year ago, we had a space for a dishwasher. So bought one and used it all the time. Remodeled kitchen, Incorporated a dishwasher. Moved house, have an integrated dishwasher. We could certainly do without one but we do use every day. Summer goes on most days and is full due to being 5 of us.

    Personal choice.

The secret of unloading the dishwasher if you hate the job, is to use your cupboards that are within standing distance of the dishwasher for all the stuff that goes in most - plates, cups, glasses etc. I just open the dishwasher door and can reach all of the shelves etc to put everything away, bar the cutlery which lives in a drawer on the other side of the kitchen.

We still have to do some washing up as ours is only slimline and I won't do saucepans etc in it.

As a very young child our washing machine broke and my parents never replaced it for some reason I never understood (the kitchen was very small and needed remodelling and they never got around to it), so if you think you're hard done by having to wash dishes, try a lifetime of hand washing all your clothes....

I was delighted to have my first experience of washing with a machine in a laundrette at the age of 25!

Another vote in favour of having a dishwasher - not least for the fact that you can tidy used utensils and dishes into the dishwasher as you go along.

If I was completely remodelling a kitchen, I would design it so that the dishwasher is near the cupboards which hold the plates etc. As someone else has said, that makes 'emptying the dishwasher' extremely straightforward.

If I couldn't have a dishwasher, I would put the sink somewhere that I could have a cupboard above it. And that cupboard would be like the ones I've seen in Spain and Italy - they're open at the bottom, and have dish-draining racks instead of shelves.

You wash your dishes, you put them in the cupboard above the sink, they drip dry, and you just take them out of the cupboard next time you need them.

Hell, I'd probably get one of those cupboards anyway, because I think they're a great idea!

Unless you've got a family of six who refuse to do their share of washing-up and drying/putting away, then they're really not necessary, in my opinion.

Another reason might be someone who's got limited mobility/use of their hands.

Anyone else should wash up their dirty dishes!! A dishwasher uses a lot of water, the tablets make the crockery and cutlery taste weird, and people who are too lazy to wash up are invariably too lazy to empty the dishwasher anyway.

Another very good reason to avoid dishwashers is their contribution to the rise in childhood allergies.
The researchers said they suspect that hand-washing dishes doesn't get them as clean as the dishwasher does, which is actually a good thing because it can help protect against allergies by exposing family members to more bacteria.
