I would hate to be without my dishwasher.

It is an essential piece of equipment for me, had to wash up by hand when the last one broke down, such a waste of my time and energy.

Plus it keeps the kitchen tidy, no dirty dishes building up in the sink.

After a few months I realised I'd rather wash up by hand than unload the thing (I really hated that job!) so I gave it away and haven't missed it at all.

I heard a man interviewed on the radio who redid his kitchen with two dishwashers - that way, he never had to unload them.

The one with the clean stuff in acted as a cupboard while the other was filled up prior to being washed.

Essential part of my life since 1966. I don't think I could cope without one. I'd probably need extensive counselling or something.

Now that is a good idea.
  • I moved into a house with a dishwasher many years ago, hadn't bothered with one before that but did not have the room anyway. Thought I'd use it and wow, I'd never be without it now. Since then we've re-done the kitchen and put a new dishwasher in.

When our dishwasher was out of action for a month or so a few years ago I hated it. Unless we washed up after every meal the kitchen looked a mess with pots and pans filling the sink. Now all those dishes etc go in the dishwasher and it goes on approximately once per day, usually a quick wash that lasts 30 minutes and uses probably less water than washing up.

Expensive cupboard...with added risk of water leaks.

He was very happy with the arrangement.

Good for him. Think I'd rather just have a normal cupboard though. Slightly more practical for long term storage!

  • I never had a dishwasher until my wife and I bought our own house and there was space for one.

I'd never go back to not having one. Makes such a difference.

So I still have to do the rinse bit, scrub off thick stuff, before putting in dishwasher. But I always had to do that anyway when hand washing. One scrub wash in cold water, before doing the main wash with soap.

So the time it saves is by not having to do two soapy hand washes (run every other day)

It does mean I get out of the kitchen a lot earlier than I used to! It's easier to keep things clean as you go. While you're still cooking you can be putting the bits you've used for prep in dishwasher, so only have plates left to sort after meal.

It keeps the kitchen tidier, because as I said, can put utensils and things away in there as you go, leaving more space for sorting out the meal. Especially useful if you're doing something like a roast dinner.

I don't get people saying that emptying dish washer is a major job. It takes no more time than putting away things off a drainer, and considerably less time than drying things by hand before then putting away.

Time is too valuable to waste doing these things. I'd never go back. Yet I was very sceptical to start with about getting one. It easily saves me 2-3 hours a week.

Exactly what I would have written. I don't like unloading it, however my friend once told me, play "beat the kettle" , that's roughly how long it takes to unload and put away
