A question about dishwashers.

Mostly a fully stacked dishwasher uses less water and energy than doing it by hand. Endless reports back this up but I'm sure there are ones that don't.

Mainly do what pleases you. If you're happy to wash up in the sink great carry on. If you find it a chore think about a dishwasher.

And in all honesty given that it's rare that somebody outside your family will lose sleep over this I don't think you need to either !

OP was seeking opinions on dishwashers..

Just because you don't like what someone says it doesn't mean it's wrong ;)

Yes, OP asked for opinions on dishwashers, not their owners.

And stating that dishwashers use more water than washing up is so wrong it's laughable.

As for the 'study' regarding dishwashers and childhood allergies, I can only imagine you didn't read the conclusion before posting the link?

I CBA with googling it right now, but a dishwasher uses far more water than washing up by hand. Common sense. Sadly missing on this board!

Same with people wanting to keep their house sterile, like those people you see on Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners (my bit of guilty telly, lol). Causes allergies.

I think you misread the OP, she wasn't seeking advice on models and makes of dishwashers, she wanted to know about whether people thought it worth having one.

For those who can afford it, life is far too short NOT to have a dishwasher. The best invention (apart from washing machine) IMO.

Stick all yer bits and bobs in a sink of COLD water with washing up liq after a big meal or that. Then just lob them in to the DW.

And for those who hate unloading.... put all your cutlery separately in the cutlery basket. You know, knives in one holder, forks in another and so on. SOOOOOO easy to pack away.

But... the kitchen design is also important. Make sure your cupboards/cutlery storage are above or beside the DW.

Lifesavers are DWs. Great throwing the pots and pans in there too after a big get together. Brilliant! (although I use a lot of the disposable foil pans too when there is a crowd. To be recommended)

Oh I totally agree, if there are a lot of people, like a party, it would be a Godsend. But some people who live alone, even, have a dishwasher. I mean !!!!!!?? What do they use for one meal: 1 plate, 1 knife and fork, a couple of saucepans.. and they need a dishwasher?? :rotfl: Hilarious.

A modern dishwasher uses an average of 10 litres per eco cycle, you put a whole days washing up in one go. You can't wash up a whole days dishes by hand in the same amount of water. Common sense really, and something most people are aware of.

I'm confused why you put all your pots and pans in a sink of cold water before putting them in the dishwasher

You don't need to put the dishwasher after every meal or even every day. There's also slimline dishwashers on the market to suit every household.

  • Just the two of us, and no space for a dishwasher without moving the washing machine or dryer. Easier for us to have these together and OH do the washing up by hand, if we had the space, and possibly more people then I'd have one.

I grew up with hands that do dishes albeit I had a dishwasher about 10 Years ago, but only for about 2 years.

We have only since bought into a dishwasher as part of moving into the house, yet I did not miss having one and it was no issue going back to hand washing.

As for having a dishwasher, loading it and unloading is all it really takes, I empty it every evening and put all the shiny crockery\cutlery\pots and pans back where they belong.........It takes around the time it takes for the kettle to boil. ;)
