  • Ballet shoes - my line manager is the problem. The place I work is so big that things don't get passed on to senior management and HR.
I have the opposite problem - my company is so small that there are no line managers or HR, just the boss, me and a handful of IT guys. If I have problems there is no one to speak to and the few times I've tried to bring up issues I've had my boss has taken it as a personal insult.
Good luck with your interview! I will keep my fingers crossed for you :)

    Once
Working for that large well known high street travel company.
It was like working with a powder keg that could explode as the manager had completely lost the plot and was I believe bi-polar with hindsight. Volatile and just plain nasty.
After two months of absolute misery and having my confidence eroded (and I was very good at my job ) I went away for the weekend -and whilst away got some perspective. When I got back I went to see my doctor who told my I was suffering from extreme stress and signed me off a month- which shocked me as he never signs anyone off for a month. I never went back and never regretted it . Financially it was tough as I didn't find another job for six months (it was several months before my self esteem returned enough for me to try) but eight years later I'm still in the same job and still (mostly) enjoy it. A friend is trying to persuade me to move to her company but part of me is wary and better the devil you know is the reason and it's only because of that previous experience.

I had a job fairly recently that I hated, I managed to stick it for nine months though. I decided that the best thing for me to do was to leave for another job that would just be a 'stop-gap'. Purely something for me to escape in to but to always earn money to as I had bills to pay.

I left the job I hated after getting a job doing home delivery for Sainsburys which I did for six months and then luckily found the job I'm in now which I really enjoy.

Maybe you could find a stop-gap too, just something to move in to until you can find something more suitable?
  • Please wait til you have another one. Employers don't like "the gap"

I am retired now - but took the view that I would "stick with it" in jobs I hated unless something better came along. I may or may not have been correct in doing that - but I was very conscious I was single and (courtesy of being poorly-paid) hadn't been able to build up much in the way of "back up resources" behind me.

Latterly - I took a job in the Civil Service and basically hated it pretty much from Day 1 and I spent many years there until retirement at 60. I learned coping mechanisms:
    - so would never allow them to send me anywhere that wasn't within walking distance of my home
-usually went out for lunchbreaks (even if I didn't have any shopping to do and was just going for a bit of a walk around)
    - learnt to mentally block out the job from when I left it each day
    - if (when....) they were being particularly unreasonable, then I would do what I could to prevent myself getting treated that way
    - had voluntary work of various kinds (and usually at higher levels than my paid job) to help with keeping my self-esteem up and reminding myself that I was more intelligent etc than the level of paid job I was having to do

I stuck it out for the pension basically and because of the mortgage I had for some years.

I think I did the best I could - as, otherwise I could see the circumstances were such that I might have landed up with even worse - eg antisocial hours etc type jobs with even lower pay (not that it could be much lower latterly:mad:).

    **********

However, I promised myself that if any (voluntary) work I did at any point after retirement wasn't right - then I would try to change it and, if that wasn't possible, then I'd leave it.

I managed to change one voluntary thing I do - and its much better all round - so I stayed.

I was doing another voluntary thing - but found myself on the receiving end of a bit of racism. Yep...I am British (English in fact) - but it felt like I was being made to feel wrong for not speaking Welsh/being a Plaid Cymru supporter (I'm in West Wales now). I thought about whether it would be possible to get the racism out of the organisation and decided it would be much easier to get myself out of the organisation - as it seems to be too entrenched. I've just resigned - telling them exactly why.:)

    *******

It felt good to be able to just think "this is unacceptable" and just walk...after all these years. My head is held high and confident.

OP, is there anything you do/skills you have which mean you could run your own business?
In our case, OH was working 80 hours a week, all weekends. His bosses were totally confident that he would handle everything and his requests for help were ignored.
We decided to bite the bullet and have set up a business together- I get the work in/advertise etc, he goes out and does it. (He has the specific skills for the job.)
At the moment, he is able to work a 4 day week (admittedly long days) for the same wage as before. I'll be honest, it is frightening throwing away the long term security but for us, it's the best thing ever.
Do you have a hobby with which you could make some extra cash- crafts etc?
I wish you all the best.
  • Feeling sick because I've actually done it. I've resigned. I was so ill over the weekend with stress and I just couldn't face the thought of going back. I was told that I would only be getting paid for the hours I was contracted for despite working double that. I realised there was a total lack of respect for me and more and more responsibility was being put on me without any proper induction/training. I'm worried what their response will be as they are a huge organisation and I'm only one me. There is no Union that represents the job I was hired to do.

This was the best thing you could have done Miss Independent. Well done. Your health is far more important, and clearly nothing was going to change at this job. Better to cut your losses.
Don't forget, your previous employers have already offered you something, right? Just make notes, if you haven't done so already of everything that went on - bullet points, rather than rambling sentences in case you need it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

Thanks Brighton Belle, I just need to calm down. I think I have an anxiety hangover. I sent a detailed resignation letter of why exactly I had to leave and I've saved copies.

I do have my other job and also some admin temping lined up and a job interview. It's not like I've walked out and been left with nothing, thank God!

:T:T I don't blame you one little bit for doing so - from what you said about the job. Its totally unacceptable to have to work 2 work weeks every week and doubly unacceptable that they were expecting half those hours for nothing.

If they start "coming back at you" about it - then it might be as well to remind them that you have been working for less (probably a lot less) than National Minimum Wage. They may have been paying you in accordance with it in theory (ie for those hours they paid you for). However, if you average out your salary over all the hours you routinely worked on top of your stated hours = I wouldn't mind betting you were being paid a lot less than NMW in actual fact.

Somehow - I cant see them getting shirty with you - as they will doubtless realise that fact themselves. If they carefully ignore that fact - then point it out to them in no uncertain terms.

    Good luck with your future.
