Has anyone here just walked out from their job ?

Am really hating my job and environment and just want to quit , it's making me really miserable , just curious to know if anyone here has done that and how quickly did you find work again, manage financially etc.

I'm so disappointed in myself as I've never been a quitter and have stayed in my previous jobs 15 and 8 yrs. I am also aware my age means my options are limited tbh.

Unless you can afford the risk and are confident in the employability of your skills then I wouldn't do it. A new employer will always be receptive to a job applicant who is looking to stretch themselves in a new role, but might see someone who has quit their job as just that - a quitter who gives up when the going gets tough.

If you don't like your job then just make applying for a new one your main focus - it will make the days much easier if you know you are working towards your exit.

I find my job boring but i cant quit as my income is a large chunk of our monthly budget. I have wanted to switch jobs for years to something i really want to do that requires 13 weeks training before you can even get accepted. My job is better than not working, i'm grateful just having a job as some people i know cant get anything at the moment.

Last job before current one I just quit. One of the best decisions I've ever made.

I was an agency worker and treated terribly. It was dragging me down and affect my emotional and mental health.

Manager was constantly threatening me and the fact that I was an agency worker she just kept telling me how easy it would be to just get rid of me without notice.

Well being an agency worker works both ways as I am not obliged to give any notice. I finished work one day and just never returned again. The following day there was an inspection which I knew about. In my mind I had this planned for a year.

I went on job seekers and put up with having little money (not even a £1m salary will entice me to go back there). I job hunted for 3 months before I got my current job starting as a temp and being permanent a few months later (think employment is easier in London). Have been in the role for 3 years now and had a promotion in that time.

I'm still in touch with an colleague in the previous job and my ex manager has admitted that she regret that I have left. I don't have any regrets though, just wish I did it sooner.

Many years ago I gave up a good job overnight as my then boss had made a serious unwanted sexual overture to me. It was in the bad old days when there was little protection.

i felt confident in being principled and walking away because I was not the only wage earner, my husband agreed with my decision , i was very employable and found a higher paying jobwithin a couple of weeks.

If you have the means to support your financial commitments it is easier to go, if you do not have savings to fall back on then you may need to follow the conventional route of finding a new job first.
  • I haven't literally walked out mid shift but I have left work after my shift and then called the next day to say I wouldn't be returning and then confirmed that in writing. I was still living with my parents at the time so, although I needed to get another job ASAP, I didn't need to worry about a roof over my head. I wouldn't walk out of a job now unless I either had another one lined up or was financially able to cope with not having a job. I can understand hating a job so much you struggle to NOT walk out though! Are you applying for other jobs? Your chances of getting a new job significantly increase by applying for new jobs :)

I'm not sure that any answers will help as it surely depends on what your skills are, your location and your current financial situation e.g. who else puts into the household pot and what dependents you have.

I notice that you have previously posted about issues at work.
    Has the situation got worse?

What are the chances that you'll be able to get another job quickly?
  • I've never walked out of a job but at the moment I have a lot of days when I feel like doing it. Its difficult because I know I'm unlikely to find something else that pays as well (and if I walk out its going to be very difficult to ask for references), so I'm just going to look for another job, and hope I find something before I flip.
  • why not find a new job then quit? I always found it was easier to find work while in work

Depending on what sort of job you do, if it were me, I would be very worried about the impact of just walking out (if this is what you are considering) on any references that I might need in the future.

The only parental advice I ever followed was never to leave a job without another one to go to. It's stood me in good stead throughout my working life, so I pass it on to you.
