He seems to find that the customers who often offer lunch are indian people. He is often tempted to accept (when they offer curry) but says no because it would take too much time to sit down and eat a meal.

    This ^^^

In some Indian cultures it is considered very bad manners to not offer a meal to someone in your home. My aunt got an extension done with a team of builders. She was making up to 30 chapattis a day!
  • I would always offer tea and coffee and also make it very clear that they are welcome to brew up themselves without asking. My partner works from home, but can often be on phonecalls all day and barely surfaces from the study- we always explain that to tradesmen so that they know he's not being rude. I think I ask in a vague way if they want lunch, but never had anyone say yes! If they did, I'm sure I'd be able to rustle them up a bacon butty or beans on toast, but they always seem to have their own butties

When we have used someone we know we have made bacon butties, but usually we don't offer lunch.
  • I don't normally offer lunch but if I am in then plenty of tea and coffee seems to go down well. The only exception to that was once when we had plasterers in and I was popping down our local to get a hot pasty and I offered to get one for him and his apprentice and they said yes please. However he had done a lot of work previously so I knew him quite well by that point. Normally they all bring packed lunches and eat in their vans.

When we had our last bit of work done, the builders set up a tarpaulin in the garden to keep their workbench under. I offered the usual tea and coffee and also said they were welcome to come inside and eat lunch if it was raining, but they always stayed outside. They brought their own sandwiches and also thermos mugs of tea etc, but would usually accept more tea from me.
