Well done on the cheaper PS4. I do still consider the joys of console gaming from time to time, but no spare hours at the mo. I did, however, have them chase a spare HDMI cable through our wall when they were hanging the TV, just in case :)

 Nice one. We bought an HDMI switch but haven't found (or bought) an HDMI cable. We stole the PS3's for the weekend while DH played Thief demo on the PS4.

Re: time I go in fits and starts for motivation. A few weeks ago I played quite a bit but this weekend (despite having the time) wasn't inspired.

I'd also consider connecting my laptop. I imagine Starcraft II would look the business on a 4K TV :j

Ooh, good point. High-def means nothing to me (still can't see the difference between standard/HD, let alone 4K), but having a larger screen is super helpful.

(Suppose there are frugal benefits to having poor vision.)

I don't have the best eyesight either, but the sharper picture does make a difference for things like colour rendition and reading subtitles when Mrs E insists on using them (she struggles to keep up with fast paced dialects, like Eastenders) ;)

I use subtitles as a metric of how interest I am in a film - if I can't be bothered to try and read them, I don't bother watching the film. ;)

We should get a bigger tv at some point, though - ours was fine when we were in a flat but now it could probably do with another 10" or so (think it's 27") to fit the space better (and be more visible from 12ft away on the couch :D).

We're not in a rush, though, so it may end up as a MF-gift to ourselves.

We went from 32" to 40", it doesn't feel like a huge change. Our goals was to have it fit the chimney breast with a foot or so on either side. In a funny way, it actually looks smaller because a wall is far larger than a TV stand! :rotfl:

Not exactly a life changing experience, but changing TV once a decade isn't exactly rampant consumerism, either.

Not a big TV watcher myself, Mrs E likes it.

I don't suppose you've done what we did? Two YEARS after getting our HD TV, we were watching a Dara O'Brian DVD and he made a joke about a couple he knew who'd had an HD TV and thought it was much better, but actually still had a scart linking it to their Sky box, so weren't watching in HD at all. We laughed our heads off and then looked at each other and went, 'Um, did we ever swap the one HDMI cable we had back to the Sky box from the Blu-ray player...??'

One quick trip to Tesco later, the Sky News ticker was suddenly unimaginably sharper :o:o:o:o:o

Having set up my niece's birthday PS3 last week using a scart, the difference an HDMI cable makes is amazing.

I think we have 4 of them... I do not look forward to the next upgrade when we need to rip the wiring back out of the wall :rotfl:

No, I've definitely been shown standard and high-def live (swapping from standard to hd channel of the same program), on a giant projector image even. Couldn't tell the difference. "But you can see the beads of sweat!"....no, I really can't, thanks.

This would also be why my default font size for things is something like 16pt and I'm not allowed to try for a driving licence. ;)

I suppose it's a variant of keeping up with the Joneses (where "the Joneses" happens to be the relative size of one's house/appliances :rotfl:).

At least, as you say, if you limit it to the every-few-years/decade purchase it's not a huge deal. I'm not sure when DH bought the PS3 but we've been together 4 years now, and we've had our tv for about 3 years, so if we did wait until we're MF it'd be coming up to a decade for replacing it.
