Enough of the argument already, did the OP get the bulb replaced by now?

the people driving on sidelights in the dark/fog/rain are accidents waiting to happen

They aren't as dangerous as the ones driving without any lights at all, however.

Fog lights are unlikely to dazzle anyone, so in an emergency situation I don't see the problem.

This doesn't mean the OP would be justified in continuing to run on fogs for the next three months though!

The speed of travel of a vehicle with only one headlight is more difficult for other drivers to determine too esp when wanting to turn right with an oncoming car with a bulb out.

If you're not sure, don't pull out. It's that simple.

It's bad enough during the day on rural roads with idiots pulling out in front of other cars.

    OK calm down dears.
Without knowing the exact situation, let's imagine you're driving along in the middle of nowhere in the dark and a headlight fails. If you keep driving, you're breaking the law, your car is not fit for the road. We all know that, don't we?
So do you stop and walk home? Do you carry spare bulbs, as is a legal requirement in some countries? As said, good luck with that on a 2008 Megane where you have to remove a wheel to get at the headlights!
We do all know, I hope, that not all cars have front fog lights. And if they do, they only light up a very close section of road in front of you.
All that said, if it was me, I would turn on the fog lights and get home at a reduced speed. Not so much to help me see, but to help others see me, and identify me as a car.

I thought you were legally allowed to continue your journey, but not drive more than is necessary without replacing the bulb, same as if you lose a number plate?

Also a car with one headlight out will travel faster as you only have one headlight unit emitting photons to give a braking effect to the vehicle instead of two.

When you start having exceptions, it is then that interpretation (and abuse) comes into it. From mid 2000 many cars display that there is a bulb failure, some cars I have seen night in night out with failed lighting.

But it is also completely unfair if your bulb blows and the police are sat around the next corner.
  • What a load of old cobblers.

I live rural and it is very dark at night, vision even worse when in heavy rain.

    Ridiculous post.
    Charming post. :rotfl:

It might be for you country yokels.

For those of us without 6 fingers on each hand and a straw permanently hanging out of our gob, judging the speed of a car with just one working headlight isn't difficult.

What happens around here or used to happen was that the driver/keeper would be handed a notice to correct within 5 working days if no charges were to be pressed.

Oh dear, resorting to insults too.

Rubbish advice and abuse, what a charmer you are!
