Please, what bit of "when she came from NI to live in London for two years"don't you understand?
And please feel free to come visit me here and I will take you anywhere you want and you will hear the term darkie used as matter of fact
Why would I lie?
Here's the figures from the 2011 census. Shows just how few non white people make up the population http://www.ninis2.nisra.gov.uk/public/PivotGrid.aspx?ds=3962&lh=73&yn=2011&sk=136&sn=Census%202011&yearfilter=
Outside of Belfast seeing a non white face other then Chinese ( or if you are lucky and have a curry house , Indian/Pakistani )0 -

Even if its true that doesn't mean it isn't racist or that its acceptable.
That said, I've known loads of people come to cities from NI or other rural, predominantly white areas and while they might have felt a bit of culture shock, none of them thought it was ok to use the word 'darkie' or other racist terms.0 -

Ah, the school is in London ? This wasn't clear from your original post. Yes, I'm very well aware that there are lots of areas where a non-white face is a rarity. Doesn't mean racist terms are acceptable and I'm baffled that anyone would think they were0 -

But you said in an earlier post,
"when the stepdaughter moved to live with us. The EA decided to put her in a school that was predominately children who were non Caucasian. I had to explain it really wasnt the best choice of school for a lass who had never known a non Caucasian in her life before because she would use the term darkie"
which certainly sounds like she was put in a class of non Caucasians in NI.0 -

i don't know whether to laugh or cry at the idea that the solution was apparently to put the child in a different school rather than teach them not to use racist language.0 -
blimey, you want to live here, anyone who is neither "white" or Chinese - is a darky - and theres not one who will say theu aare racist - its just the words they use - still
Killed me when the stepdaughter moved to live with us. The EA decided to put her in a school that was predominately children who were non Caucasian. I had to explain it really wasnt the best choice of school for a lass who had never known a non Caucasian in her life before because she would use the term darkie
Her dad ( hubby) isnt really much better. Hes a lot better then he was but because he too was bought up in a caucasion area, he too sees colour. I remember I invited a friend round to have dinner and stay the night. Hubby walks in from work, comes says hello, passes himself, has a good time. Later in bed he turns and says " you never told me she was black" !!:(
Neither my step daughter nor hubby are racist, they have just never lived or worked in a mixed race society and they have grown up where "darkie" is still a term freely used, People of colour are still an oddity here. We have had friends staying with us and been in bars where it seemed like half the bar took a detour to come gawk at the "darkies"
Gonna be great fun when my niece and BIL comes visit - she wears a hijab and he wears a thawb
I live and worked in a place where non-White faces are rare. In fact, I could name the individual non-White pupils in my big school.
However, I've never heard anyone use such a horrible term as 'darkie'!Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

Perhaps, as my stepdaughter soon learned it wasn't acceptable
Yet here, outside of the city it is still is a commonly used term, through all walks of lives and seriously they don't see it as being racist, it's just the term they are used to. The travelling community are also called tinkers quite openly
Don't forget this country didn't see any immigration until the last decade.
As others have said we have gone through many changes of what is acceptable and what isn't any more and as others have said, different generations are used to different terms and some are just now scared to open their mouths in case they get it wrong
Remember my mum having to do a course when she worked for the LA back in the 80's being told that the PC way was all "non whites" were now black. As she pointed out, that would offend her SIL as he was Arab and didn't want to be labelled black
When I was at school, my nieces and nephews would have been known as half cast, now I think it's 'mixed race" however all I see are beautiful young adults0 -

Me neither. Where I went for uni in London, white people were a minority.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked
