I've bought a couple of Sky HD boxes from sellers who had cancelled their Sky contract, in both cases their recorded content left on was playable.

Although the previous owners cancelled their contracts, you will be able to access recordings according to your level of subscription.

I was just confirming a previous post as I realised what you say was the case.

No cards as I had my own

Yep, that answers it. You're using YOUR subscription card which includes the £10 Sky+ sub, that allows you to play and record. Nothing to do with encryption or channels. Even works when you put it in someone else's box.

I was just confirming that the recordings still remain on the hard drive and can be played if you renew your Sky subscription, nothing more and nothing less.

Yep, but it just needed clarified a bit - it's a minefield.

... when inserting an active subsciption card, with a Sky+ subscription.
