In my 'industry' I've personally known of 3 suicides in the past 8 years. You may be letting off steam, but I see your references as scaremongering !
Up roar perhaps because doctors/consultants are being asked to work weekends. It's about time the NHS became a 7 day week health service instead of a Mon-Fri one to suit time on the golf course. Modern life is 24/7 365 days a year, god forbid other professional bodies deciding they didn't want to work weekends. The country would grind to a halt.
Why should patients be at a greater risk of death at weekends or immediately thereafter. Why is primary care severly reduced at weekends.
The NHS generally provide outstanding care in the UK and is possibly one of the best health facilities in the world, but why should it rest on it's laurels. The changes may not be perfect, they may not suit all, some of them may not work as proposed, but the NHS needs change and modernisation and it's about time something was done.
I'm not really sure what point you're making. Of course Dr's work 24/7, how do you think A&E operates for example?
I've recently had more time than I would like in hospital. Whilst it was apparent there was no sign of any consultants at weekends, there was definitely Dr's on duty. I was still seen on ward rounds, and Dr's were called if needed.
I agree with Karlie. The wage junior Dr's receive is pitiful. Obviously they will go up the ladder at some point and earn a lot more, but to start on a wage that someone in retail or similar could earn, having had to go to medical school for 5+ years, make life and death decisions and work crazy hours is appalling. I would much rather have a well rested Dr making decisions about me than one who has had to work a 90 hour week and is exhausted.
I certainly don't believe everything I read in the media, I'm only too well aware of how it can be manipulated. But having been in hospital myself and experiencing the situation, plus hearing from Dr's, surely you can see that cutting their pay and making them work more hours isn't going to help the situation just make it worse.0 -
I shall end the matter with this letter addressed to Mr Hunt from a NHS doctor:I'm not sure who your poorly chosen words about bringing back "that sense of vocation and professionalism" to doctors' contracts was aimed at, but it wasn't us.
We are the people who are starting work early and finishing late, often by hours, to make sure that patients get the medical care they deserve. We are the people holding the hand of your grandmother as she passes away because her husband couldn't get in on the weekend bus. We are the people crying in sluice rooms because we've got no idea how we're going to get through the next five referrals on three hours sleep and no breakfast or lunch. We are the people who are delaying having a family, or changing our career because we can't think of a way to explain to our children that we have to put other people before them yet again. We are the people missing school concerts, sports days, and prize giving ceremonies because we have a duty to our patients. We are the people getting slapped and bitten by patients with dementia because they're frightened and don't know any better. We are the people getting punched in the face by the drunk who does know better but chooses not to.
We are the people you are alienating with your ignorant, overbearing, and out of touch soundbites. We are the people who are leaving in droves because we can't bear to work for you anymore.
