How soon to apply for credit card after completion?

I know not to apply for anything now, but there are a few odd jobs etc the house needs and I would prefer to put some spends on a CC that is 0% instead of touching our reserve pot that is for emergencies.

Does anyone know if you are at a distinct disadvantage applying straight after completion? I know CCs can affect mortgage applications so wondering how strong it is the other way around.

I earn 23K and don't really know what amount I could even ask for. Got one CC with £1200 limit which I don't use since 0% ran out but is kept for emergencies. I got that when I was earning 7k when a student.

Any advice or direction as to where I might find help?

Why don't you ask your existing provider if they have any offers on 0% purchases at the moment that you are eligible for. Also ask them if you are eligible for an increase to your limit.

Nothing to stop you applying the day after completion. Howeve, you probably won't be on the electoral register at your new property so you may need to wait for this to update before you have much chance of getting accepted for more credit.
  • I waited 3 months after moving home, I sorted the electoral register upon moving in and was accepted for a card.

Most CC application forms ask about recent previous addresses, and so people who apply who were on the register before moving ought not to be at a disadvantage.

I suggest that you use the eligibility checker on this site and apply for any card where the checker suggests you have a good chance of being accepted. What you should NOT do is respond to a rejection by applying for something else. One credit card application is not going to do any harm, but a few would not be a good idea.
  • I was in a similar situation last year. I applied about 4 days after the completion date. The slight difference was that I still had the posession of my rented flat for another month so I applied using the old address. It was approved without any issues.
In any case it should have no effects on your mortgage. I would say give it a go - worst case scenario, your credit card application will be declined.
  • Great, thanks for the posts.

We both live with parents at the minute. Have practically no furniture etc so I guess technically we could apply after completion before we move into the new place?
