I thought the bigging up of marg was very suspect. Butter is far superior. It's a natural foodstuff , unlike Margarine which is often full of additives and fillers.0

Yes, it seemed strange to get a biased opinion on whether margarine was as good as butter.
I quite enjoy the programme but think that it is somewhat 'scripted' and don't believe the look of surprise when Greg and the other chap appear at the supermarket.

One of these episodes was filmed in my local supermarket. I have to say that Greg arrived a long time before the family did their shop. He wandered round talking to customers and spent a lot of time chatting to staff and listened to what they had to say. He was a really nice guy and was nothing like his on screen persona.
I like the program, this weeks food swap of ice cream for frozen yoghurt made me think. I love Ben and Jerrys, I can eat a tub in one sitting (if I didn't pace myself). I've always thought if frozen yoghurt as being washy washy but bought some to try it. Yum! It's lovely and at 114 calories for 1/4 of a tub it doesn't make me feel guilty!
I'm never going to drive round buying a packet of this in one supermarket, then a bottle of something in another supermarket. Quite frankly I haven't got the time, but the program does give me informed choices I can make.
I'm never ever going to buy marg over butter, no matter how they 'big it up'!0 -

Well the programme did provide the scientific reasons behind it, so it was fairly easy to understand. Basically the composition of margerine and other spreads has changed over the years.
Butter is not far superior, because it is made from saturated fat, the kind which is full of the wrong kind of cholesterol, which clogs up arteries and causes heart attacks.0 -
I think I'm going to have to own up to being a dozy and whatever the other word means. I always leave the skins on my home made chips. I thought the skins were full of nutrients and fibre and good for me.
Yes, but the reason the woman was leaving the skins on, was because she didn't know how to peel a potato, or was possibly too lazy to do so.;)0 -

There has also been some studies which suggest the way spreads rush through transit of the guts they may well increase the risk of bowel cancer-although this is still being looked at. There are also proven studies showing that butter and full cream milk actually increase the good blood cholesterol not the bad and a study in sweden found side by side studies of people post heart attacks-one group on spreads/skimmed milk one on butter/full fat milk showed a decrease in risk of another heart attack in the second group.
The trouble is we are still investigating how fat and cholesterol in food translates to what ends up in the blood and it is becoming clear it is far more complex than fat bad low fat good. Not to mention the major issues with artificial sweeteners in many so called diet products.
I did find the bit of levels of fat in ham very interesting, as well as the costs, but I definitely did not agree with the spreads lady who clearly was just a manufacturer "schill".
I thought the £84 a week for a family of four figure to be about right, we are 6 and spend around that a week, sometimes less. But I shop around and use local farm shops as well as the discounters which can make a big difference.

Sorry Andy but this advice was based on suppositions made in the 50's/60's latest research shows sat fat in butter full fat milk does not translate to the wrong sort of blood lipids ie. bad sort of blood cholesterol and in fact is the opposite increasing levels of good blood lipids. However the same cannot be said for sat fat on meat or in meat products that aren't absorbed by our bodies in the same way. We also need a good mix of fats so olive oil etc are still good parts of the diet.
Unfortunately decades of government messages and food manufacturers pushing fat is bad all else good, whilst ignoring for years the clear links with obesity and heart issues from sugar and high carb diets (sugar and corn syrup are cheap and easy to add to food products to make up in taste for the removal of fat content which is cheap and easy to do) is very hard to backtrack on. TBH for most people it all becomes noise and it feels like no food is good to eat.
For me having looked at the evidence its clear that the foods our body deals best with are the ones most natural and least processed. More fruit and veg than meat, then more fish than white meat, more white meat than red meat. Reduce both sugar and in particular artificial sweeteners and never have artificial sweeteners on there own ie diet drinks with meals only because of the way they affect our metabolism.

Just watched the show having seen Torbrex' link from the beetroot chocolate cake thread.
I was stunned at the poor food choices the family made (the mum being a healthcare professional should have known much better!) but even more so at the self-congratulatory tone at the end of the show...the family were still eating cr*p. The kids were lovely, I have no idea why people feed their kids processed foods though. It doesn't take a genius or a Jamie Oliver to steam some vegetables.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
