Why don't you contact celtic sheepskin and ask them a/ what their heels are like and b/ where their skins are from? And if you buy them in the UK and they don't fit/ are the wrong size /have any other problem, you can return them easily.

If price is the issue, get Bearpaws from TKMaxx.
  • The skins are by-products of the food industry. So that's good :) will do some thinking but Celtic is looking pretty good right now! Thanks again!!

jenniewb, thank you for your detailed reply!

I haven't purchased leather goods for a few years now. I haven't gotten rid of old things but no new purchases. My current handbag is what most would consider a grocery bag made from cotton. My shoes were made of recycled tires, potato sacks made fair trade in Ethiopia. I just started buying new clothes. I used to buy clothes at consignment shops but in the UK there isn't any and charity shops aren't quite the same as a US consignment store. Guess as I got older I have gotten a bit soft and self righteous :) Some of my friends call me a lentil weaver :/

While it's how I like to live, I don't try to make others do the same. My husband thinks my shoes are hideous and he's so glad that I finally bought some new clothes. He loves his leather goods and as long as its humane, animals are for us to consume. That's why when our daughter asked for uggs I started researching. I want to buy from a good company that uses 'happy' sheeps.

Anyways, it's basically why I wanted to see if anybody here knows about the skinning part...

As for trying... If I take DD to try now she'll know that I am considering uggs for her XMas present. So I'll just wing it and hope they'll fit or she'll grow into them soon.

As for reviews... Can't find much about Celtic collapsing or not. I read about the warmth but that's it. Then the Kiwi... Are some of the reviews on this thread fakes? Seems odd to create an account and post just that one thing, how awesome the boots and shipping was. Coincidently yesterday a lady with some Kiwi passed by me. I remember seeing the tag/logo on the website and hers looked it and I stopped her to ask. She said she was happy with her boots and hers looked nice. I just hate seeing kids (and adults) walking around with with collapsing uggs. Each time I want to walk up to them and ask how it could be comfy to walk on the sides of their shoes.

Wow- I take my hat off to your eco chic, thats quite a challenging way to live- not because of personal preferences at all as much as the world is so built on consumerism that the part which centers on mother nature and humanity so easily gets overlooked, it must take a great deal of research to do everything.

One thing I will say about Uggs though is that the skins apparently come from Australia. I spoke to an Australian friend earlier this year who said although the company are owned by Americans and have the boots made in China, apparently the base materials (eg leathers and sheep skins) are from Australia as they are known for their quality. I have no idea how they obtain them and would myself want to know before ordering if I were to order again as from my experience in Textiles and just being particular about where my clothes are made (long story) brands can change where the base materials come from at the drop of a hat. However with Ugg Australia wanting to remain as Ugg "Australia", I'd hazard a guess at them finding it somewhat harder to start getting in skins from other countries just to cut costs!

I did have a Celtic Sheepskin catalogue but recycled it without reading as I am in a "want to buy everything" frame of mind and really can't afford to be! They do have a blurb in the catalogue if anyone you know has it which says a bit about where the boots are from and etc. I'm sure I remember the skins coming from either Australia or Scotland but either way I don't have a clue about the skinning process and would imagine asking any company a straight question about this would give dubious results if they had been trying to hide something. (Or maybe thats just my own cynical mind

Just a reminder that Cost Co stock a Kirkland brand genuine Australian sheepskin boot every winter and the price point is about £40 this year (3 years ago it was £27 so going up but still far cheaper than other sheepskin boots).

Their isn't a brand logo on the back of the boots, they're plain but great alternative to Ugg's, and my personal favourite...emu's, for those on a tight budget.

They also have kids boots which are vat free and around £25.

I am actually after a pair of Emu Stinger lo's in black (what will be my fourth pair). But I refuse to pay anything near £100 for them as my last three pairs I have paid around £40/50, and will go up to about 70 for these. If anyone knows of any priced reasonably, please let me know. thank you.

  • How about that pair of doc Martens with the union jack, hand stitched on the toe as it should be. Get on the Amazon discount finder which by the way, is really very good indeed, you'll find the best deal guaranteed
  • I thoroughly recommend kiwi-sheepskins. Been using them years and they are great. One of my pairs has lasted some 5 years and still going strong.
Have just been scammed on some fake UGG Australia boots so not happy. Should have stuck with Kiwi.
