What's the best way to sell my private number plate N5 AUD?

I want to sell my private number plate N5 AUD but there are so many private reg. companies I don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure whether I should take it off my car now and put onto retention or leave it on the car until the plate is sold. Has anyone sold a private plate before and know which option is best?

I've never sold a private plate before but as a buyer I would be put off if the plate wasn't actually available to simply transfer over into my name immediately, and first the old owner had to take it off his car and get his car re-registered etc in order for the registration plate to be released free and clear of the shackles of already being on a car.

To be honest the plate doesn't strike me as being particularly "must have". Audi don't have an "N5" model; the Highbury/Holloway postcode in London isn't particularly synonymous with the Australian Dollar; and I presume there aren't many people called Audrey born on Bonfire Night who are in the market for a private plate.

If the plate is already on a 1995 Audi then maybe you'll get £50 extra for having a custom plate on it when you sell, or simply sell it for the exact same amount of money, just a bit quicker. Some of the number plate websites might give you a nominal amount of money for it if they find something compelling about it to add to their stock, or else just offer to sell it for a large commission once you've got it on retention rather than actually on your current car.

I have to agree with bowlhead99.

I don't see there being much of a market for this particular number.

It'll cost £80 to put it on retention and I can't see you getting very much more than that for it.

Maybe I've missed something - but why do you call it a 'private' plate?

I'm sure that you are aware that no-one actually owns any number - as they all belong to the DVLA, and what you have is just the right to display it.

To me it's just another old plate from around 1995 - don't make the mistake of thinking that every/any 20 year old number is worth anything special.

Now if it hadn't had that N at the front of it .......

Start by realising that the companies may say its worth £££££ but they wont give you that for it, they will advertise it and if someone shows an interest they will sell it on your behalf for a commission.

Check some of the numbers they list, you can sometimes find ones that the DVLA have not released and available directly from the DVLA.

  • There's an "N Soud" on twitter, maybe they'll buy it. Someone on Google+ as well, but they live in Ksa-Riyadh so might not be much use to them . . . ;)

I think most real people would check the plate with DVLA and if it came back as no trace, move on and look for someone really selling a plate.

All plates with 1 number after the first letter were only ever released as "private" numbers to buy, and so hasn't just come off an old 1995 scrapper.

But I agree, I would not pay more than reg fee for that reg including all fees. There are thousands available on the DVLA site for £250 so why would anyone want to pay more.

I've sold private plates twice , retention the only way
Have you thought of posting a for sale ad on an Audi forum ??
  • Thank you everyone. One site valued it at £1,500! I thought that couldn't be right, so I wanted to explore my options but wasn't sure where to start. The plate came with my car at no extra cost and I didn't by my little IQ for the plate. I'm hoping to get another car soon and thought selling the plate might help towards the cost of my next car.

    £1500?

Just putting that unrealistic price on it to get your business!
  • I reckon its worth £80.01 including the transfer fee.
