i had a £3,309.4 bill for data last month for an additional 5.4 meg of data over a 4 hr and 2 hr period

BT have refunded it but they are still ahppy to charge 50p per meg or £612 per gig

I suggest switching to a plan with a higher data allowance, Three offer unlimited data for £17. That way your bill is nice and predictable as you can't use more than that.

You haven't answered my question - what is the difference between the mobile phone sector and the energy sector that causes heavily surcharged out-of-allowance usage to be justified in the mobile phone sector but not in the energy sector?

on my electricity if I don't use ANY I still get billed 16p per day (its called a standing charge)...

so I get a bill for £5 a month without any usage, and if I use any energy they charge me an agreed price for every bit I use.

I have a phone, I get a bill for £15 a month and they throw in some minutes txts and data, and If I use more they charge me an agreed price for every bit I use.

the difference is a lot less than you seem to think.

I've never seen a case where what NFH has said has actually applied. It is up to the customer to pick the plan that is correct for them and change it if necessary.

In this case it is the customers fault, not the company. The op let their child use their phone which they knew would be for streaming video. I don't want to sound like I'm defending a mobile company but people need to be so careful especially with data usage.

The excess charges have to be fair

Well, this can be debated, but £3.3K for 6Mb is obviously not fair as 20Mb cost no more than £20 as a part of a monthly plan.

What's strange about this story is that the newspaper report says that he received a text that he was going to go over his allowance BEFORE he started downloading the video. And then he downloaded six episodes of SpongeBob - so he knew he was going to get a bill before he started and had an opportunity to check how much the charges were if he wanted to.

Apparantly it's when other customers have to pay his bill for him.
