Hello, was minding my own business driving along dual carriageway, in the inside lane. A learner driver approached from an on-ramp. Failed to merge with my lane. My choices were either drop my speed or to pull over to the outside lane. Was surprised that they didn't match my speed and pull in behind me.

Should the learner ask for a refund, or should I book some new lessons if the rules have changed.

If there was room for you to move over safely into the outside lane, why wouldn't you?

You should book some lessons. It's not about 'rules' its about anticipating situations.

You will be taught it is good driving technique to move over if the adjacent lane is vacant and let joiners join, even more so if the driver joining is a learner.

It gets you out of a potential conflict situation and moves you out of a potential blind spot, even more appropriate if the vehicle joining is an HGV.

What a load of carp. Maybe moving over could have been ideal, but certainly doesn't mitigating the learners poor driving. And if they had a driving instructor alongside then his/her poor performance.

    Op did nothing wrong.

Op did nothing wrong legally, but advanced or defensive driving would mean being ready for the learner's actions.

I've not had an accident in over a million miles, but if I'd stuck to my "rights" I'd have had a few.

No, moving was ideal in this situation.

May have been the ideal action but the fact that the supervising driver appeared not to instruct the learner on the correct way to use on ramps (hint: those dotted white line mean that the oncoming vehicle has to GIVE WAY*) calls into question their competence

    * Normally by slowing or accelerating to safely fit into a gap in the traffic. There may be occasions where the vehicle may need to stop.

Learners make mistakes, we all make mistakes
You should have simply mitigated their mistake and got on with driving wherever it is you were going.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Just do whatever makes life easier, slow down, speed up, pull out, whatever. It's a bit worrying that something so obvious gets onto a forum.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Considering the number of vehicles I see that think they have a god-given right to expect everybody to get out of their way when they join via a slip road then I am not.

I had the pleasure of watching one d%^khead having to take to the hard shoulder when the artic in the left hand lane took no action (couldn't move out, couldn't accelerate as at max speed and wasn't going to brake as it would probably take 2 miles to get back up to speed) to allow him in.
