You can actually get huge sizes of fleece all in ones. M&S do up to adult sizes! In the childrens range I think they go up to about age 10.. vertbaudet do big sizes too. BHS do bigger sizes.. my 7 year old has a few.. and mothercare do up to about age 10 too I think

my nan always used to say

'don't put your jumper on too soon, or you won't feel the benefit of it when you really need it'!

Is this true???...or an old wives tale. Do we really have to feel a bit of cold, to toughen up, so that jumpers are more effective later in the winter, when it's really really cold??

I remember as a kid, really trying not to put on my coat when outside on a cold day, so that the coat would really work well when the temperature dropped further. Not sure this really works tho!...????

I think it's true. Having been skiing in -18 C and coming back home and wondering why everyone was cold and in jumpers and coats ;)

You do get used to the cold - one tip for preparing for sub zero temperatures for skiing etc was to have a completely cold burst of water at the end of your shower, then to alternate hot and cold and as the days go on you get (a bit more) accustomed to it and can stand it for longer.

However I don't recommend that for anyone with heart problems as it makes you leap out of your skin!! I only did it briefly to prepare for going to Canada skiing in seriously cold conditions.

We have friends who always have the heating turned up at home so the kids can just wear t-shirts or whatever they want indoors - they are always cold whenever they go anywhere at all, even with huge jumpers on - you definitely get used to things, either way round.

  • Hi, I've not really had chance to read much of this thread, its so long. I usually use my heating in winter only for a couple of hours in the morning and the same in the evening and dry any washing on the radiators that can't go in the dryer.
    Now I'm starting to wonder.
Would I be better to leave the heating on for longer to dry all my washing (there is an awful lot of this) and be nice and warm at the same time or is it better to continue as I am and use the dryer for the majority of the washing?
  • Hi all, I have been lurking for a few days, catching up with all the posts.
Im going to hav a go at making a draft excluder, was thinking of chopping up an old fleace blanket to make it, could propably get 2 out of it & they arnt much, £2.59 in ikea & there was a previous post about asdas samartprice one, might try stufing it with an old pillow i didnt want to throw out. Will that work?
I hav read in previous posts about this winter being a particuarly cold one, is this tru or are we just preparing for the worst? I dont mind in being prepared!!
I have a wind up torch & will check tesco & asda for the radio/torch version, just incase! Think il make a list of a few other things to get in...just incase!
I quite like winter when its cold, not wet tho & the preparation is quite nice, to make sure we are all nice and warm! I have a new kitten so hoping he will keep my lap warm too!
Thanks all for the tips, ideas & inspiration! Kee them coming!
    Kate
  • I think its true to say you do get used to the cold and putting a jumper on to early will make things worse. I used to wear a hoody in summer even but decided i was being silly so only wore a thin shrit and school jumper. Come summer and i found the heat unbearable for a little while :D

For winter ive asked my mum to put another layer on my curtains as they let a lot of cold air in. They are about 5 foot high and 10-12 foot wide with a nice south westerly wind blowing on them constantly!

Jimjam's mum - have you tried a sleeping bag for the littlun? I didn't buy one for my daughter until she was about 9 months, but I really wish I'd bought one earlier, it was brilliant. She seemed to sleep anywhere in it, and I didn't have to worry about her pulling the covers over her head. I bought a "babygro" which are quite expensive, but I think most places sell them now.

Just to say that Tesco have grobags in the clearance stuff! Saving £5.50/6!

    I am absolutely freezing today!!!

The thermostat says it's 21 degrees in the house but I am FREEZING!!
    Can't seem to get warm.

If my fireplace was hooked up yet I'd put it on! But refuse to put central heating on yet.

21 degrees should be enough, so how come I'm so cold????

    brrrr :snow_laug

I usually get cold if I'm overtired or ill.

A warm bath is the best thing to warm you up right the way through ;)

I agree newlywed, a lovely soak in a bath does warm you the whole way through:) We have gas for our heating and as it is so expensive we are trying not to put it on, till later. I have lots of washing to dry though today as my son is just back from holiday, so loads of washing and my other son is going to Australia fr a year tomorrow, and i have been busy sorting out what needs freshened up in the washing machine, although I have all their jeans drying indoors in the hot press and another wooden clothes drier upstairs in a little room, so when the heating is on for a few bursts during the day/night about teatime usually lately at least the heavier items are drying better. I have a washer drier but won't use the drier only very rarely as I always like to line dry whenever possible. My husband is up very early in the mornings for his job and this means he is in bed quite early at nights, so I pop a lovely toasty flleece which I bought cheaply in Ikea months ago, and cover my legs in it and I am happy and warm, and then I sit and knit or read:) Happy days:)
I also love the whole planning of getting ready for winter as well.:) Happy planning everyone
Do a little kindness every day.;)
