Gah! Marmite you beat me to it!!

I have two bags of tealights in the bottom of my fridge ready for cosy winter nights (AFTER my 2 year old twins are in bed of course!!!). It's a bit of a problem when I've done a big shop as there isn't always room for everything but I think if I take them out I'll forget about them so they are staying there!!

This thread is awesome, I've got so many tips from it, my list is almost two pages long and contains ideas I've shamelessly stolen that will make our winter safer, cheaper, warmer and all round lovelier so thanks to all!!

A bit chilly here tonight, so decided to give my gas fire a test run to make sure it works ok.

Its been on for 15mins, so going off now as its too warm now!

We went out this afternoon to put the turnout rug on DD's horse - whereupon we had HOT sunshine for the rest of the afternoon ;) - however, we were just saying, the will it rain tomorrow website doesn't lie because it is CHILL-EE now - don't know about the horse, but I am definitely sitting here with a fleece wrapped round me and the hens were one large ball of hens instead of being spread out all over the place when I went to lock them up earlier... weather station in the kitchen says it's 11 degrees outside and 21 in the house, but I think it must be lying as it's not that far from the oven which was on earlier and I'd bet it's not 11 degrees outside - not with the wind which goes Siberia - Fields Behind My House - My Patio. Anyway, the Fleece Is Staying. And I bet Hermione (horse) is glad for her rug tonight - there is a wind mill (modern white thing) in the school behind her field, and that was going hell for leather when we fed her tonight...

It's cold here too inside as well as out too early for the heating if i wait til november i can just about manage the gas bill but this year going to be a bit different as no gas fire it failed the spillage test with the ceiling fan on i don't use both at the same time but safety first = no fire even thought i didn't use it often at least i had a choice now it looks like thermals out before october and my lovely fleece blanket it's more like hugging a teddy bear soo soft if that not warm enough then it's out with a quilt being cold outside is one thing but inside need to be toasty warm which reminds me i need yes need a winter coat mine is 4years old and i can't sew it anymore it was a waterproof one but not any more and the wadding is disintergrating don't know why might try a candle or 2 if i get a chance

Hi again, just wanted to pass on some advice. OH and I had tealights on our mantlepiece underneath a lovely antique mirror. We were in the dining room eating supper and heard a bang, thought it was next door but in fact it was the heat from the candle that had cracked the mirror. I felt so stupid (and annoyed!!). Don't put your candles under glass. I'm possibly the only person who hadn't thought of that!!

coldstreamalways, I for one am grateful for the heads up. When you see pictures in glossy magazines they often have candles on mantelpieces so I probably wouldn't have thought twice
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Also, don't put candles on a 'unit' (large dresser type thingy!), I did during one power cut and singed the wood at the top which overhung where I'd put the candle .

I remember at a party a while ago we had a candelabra on the table which someone had sensibly put on a large salver however by 1 am there suddenly appeared a river of wax on the table > if i have a big candle I use a storm lantern thingy to keep it safe and that works really well.

Went out for a meal with a friend tonight on the way back home near my flat we looked in a skip and there was some of those large bolster cushions belonging to a settee sitting there, so I said to my friend grab em and we scarpered up the road and when i got home Ive had a good look at them, there quite large so I now have 3 large door draughtproofers and all for nothing .....we looked a right site running down the street laughing with the cushions under our arms I blame the Baileys myself lol
