I love the quilting idea. I wonder? has anyone done a cost annalysis? I am considering buying cheap duvets to do this with and also to hang on the wall,tapestry- like.

My sons room is covered in cotton throw type things, some are the thin ones, other closer to rugs. The sort that Indian shops sell with pics of dragons/patterns etc on them.
Makes a massive difference 3 degrees lower behind them
As he said the heating clicks on at 18/19c, so instead of the heating being on 'cause its 15c it stays off for a lot longer.
His flat has 14' ceiling so the heat goes up (he also put throws as ceiling drapes now to in the winter only) and north facing room Victorian drafty conversion.

He spoke to him last night about it and he wants me to sandwich an old 4.5 tog duvet between 2 throws for his walls to see how that goes.
It was a cheap one £2 in MrS clearance a while ago now.
He has hung a duvet as a door before in an open plan arrangement at one place, that worked very well.

We bought a goosedown quilt some years ago, I had to get rid of it we could not stand the crackiling noise everytime someone turned over, it kept me awake after 3 nights not sleeping I took it off the bed and went back to our old one. My friend who also bought one had the same problewm, her husband refused to go to bed until she had changed back to the old duvet.

OOH i remember having an old one years ago that was exactly the same, i`ve already got one that i`ve had for about 5 years now from dunelm and it is fantastic - super warm and very comfy and snuggly. I don`t know what the difference is in the new and old type but i couldn`t live with the crackly one either.

I`m hoping that this is the good type or it will go back :D I think that the covers were made of different material a while ago too and feathers used to poke through, couldn`t stand that either.

Planning on starting the GC again soon :p
  • I've been reading all your posts over the last few days and I'm inspired to to make some changes. We really need to make some changes and I think we could cut back on our heating bills with some of your ideas.

I think the fleece curtain linings is great, please could some one advise what a good price for fleece is and where you normally buy? To be honest I have no idea where to start, I've been browsing but it doesn't seem cheap.

    Thanks!

I'm definately going to have to get the letterbox sorted before the colder months, the postman shoved my mail through it so forcefully that the flap at the back (on my side) of the letterbox opening broke off and won;t fit back on. Also i'm trying to think up a way of fixing a door curtain to that door. I can't put one above it though as the ceiling is very low at that point and is only marginally hugher than the topmost part of the door. Probably i will just have to fix some curtain wire to the door itself and at least that will keep the letterbox drafts at bay.

Parsonswife - thanks so much for the snood info. I've got some handspun wool that I want to use up and this looks as if it might be the way to do it.

I'm going to try and improve on fleeces at the window this winter by making window quilts:

    http://www.econogics.com/busys/wnquilt.htm

    http://www.manytracks.com/Homesteading/winquilt.htm

Very popular in Canada, says my new Canadian neighbour, the extra layers should work even better.
I'm also going to try one with the £1 foil survival blankets in them, should reflect more heat back into the room but may tear easily as I make it, but as I have one feel the need to try it.
Could also use old thin duvets too.
I used one of those survival blankets over the hutch of one of the guinea pigs last winter and it stood upto being folded back and pushed out of the way for months - not a tear in it so they seem to be sturdier than normal foil- hope this helps :) And I love the quilts for the window. We are going back to the days of wallhangings and such arent we - still we all know the old ways are the best ways. I just want a mangle now or a posser then I can bin the washing machine :T

It might all be in vain with possibly a mild winter BUT getting it in now could save some pennies, meet ample stock and be ready, just incase!!

I saved a tenner on a Snug rug deluxe getting it in the summer, I bet they were like gold-dust in the winter!!

Qvc have had Christmas in July shows. Haven't spotted anything Christmassy in the shops YET!!

I have a curtain on the door which opens into the boot room, there was no room for a rail so I got a portiere rod from ebay, it fixes to the door and the frame and moves as the door opens and closes. I still need to line the curtain, I am planning on getting a fleece blanket from Ikea to hang inside the curtain.
